Description A prairie rattlesnake soaks up the heat from a warm rock, a welcome relief to the snake after several days of cold and rain. This one was about 3 ft. long and had a really nice rattle on him.

LOL! Thanks! Prairie rattlesnakes really are pretty docile. Don't poke'em or try to pick'em up, and you're pretty safe around them.

This shot really shows off the characteristic arrowhead-shaped head so common on vipers. Zoom lenses are your friend when photographing venomous snakes...

When I see a Rattler, I remember one of America's Concept flags: Don't tread on me.

Oh, indeed! There was a reason they chose the rattlesnake as an early symbol.

That's a really superb shot. You can make out every scale. You're braver than I am. I wouldn't stick around too close if I came across one of these.

Thanks, Mark! Did you notice the scar on his back? Must have been a close encounter with a raptor.
