Description On August 20, 2008 BNSF GP38-2 2100 (ex-BN 2100), GP38-2 2322 (ex-BN 2322, nee-SLSF 467), GP39M 2891 (ex-BN 2891, nee-SP GP35 7748) and GP38-2 2290 (ex-BN 2290, nee-SLSF 435) have just passed under the 10th Ave. S. Missouri River bridge on their way out of Great Falls with the Moore Turn (Great Falls to Moore, MT and back). The four geeps are pulling a massive load consisting of one gondola and one covered hopper.

Oh heck they do that kind of thing everywhere out here. UP has this tendency to lash two GP38-2s or SD40-2s together and leave them alone for say, 15 years, before retiring or reassigning one. Out here, they move nothing but grain hoppers and tankers.

BNSF (at least up here) doesn't leave them together too long, as these sets change up frequently. One geep will suddenly be gone and replaced with a different one that arrived recently about every few weeks.

On the KCS, that amount of power might not be enough considering how ramshackle the old power is on many railroads. I'll bet this BNSF crew has only the second engine online so they'll have a quiet ride in the lead unit.

On some of the lines around here, this amount of power is necessary because of the grades. It's actually more for the tractive effort than the actual power. On this job, though, it's probably because there's several loaded hoppers they have to pick up at the elevator in Moore.

I wasn't able to stick around on the bridge as the train approached, so I don't know how many were on or off line. I was getting weird looks for stopping on the bridge for some reason...
