Description Sometimes, you go looking, hiking, driving, sitting, waiting to get shots of them. You search and search, and see them overhead, or in the distance and try to catch a shot that's not bad, but not good either.

Then, when you're doing something completely different, not looking for them, there they are. Unexpectedly.

I was driving east on US 89. I was about half way between Belt and Great Falls, and there were two of them, in a stubble field, right off the highway. Right. Freaking. There. And not at all bothered by the traffic, or me and my camera.

I can't believe my luck. All my crappy, distant shots of bald eagles are completely blown away by this one and the other I one I got.

It screws with your head, I know. I've never seen a bald eagle even outside of captivity except for once, and it blew me away. Apparently they're all over the place here, but I never see them. I guess water is a good place to start (and dead mammal ).

Yeah, they like to hang out along rivers and lakes that don't compeltely freeze over. And these two were right beside a deer carcass.

Funny thing. So was mine. Up by Kirwin Wildlife Refuge (fairly close to Phillipsburg), there's tons of 'em. They love the water fowl.

Haha. Life's funny like that. xD Hahaha. But wow. How fortunate for you to have a camera there on hand. (Even though I'm pretty sure you have a camera with you wherever you go fairly often. )

Believe it or not, down here in Arkansas we have Bald Eagles, lots of them especially in winter.

I am considering going up and scanning the shores of Beaver Lake in hopes of seeing some.

me too, I never took any of wildlife before. Any pointers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hunter1828 In reply to labrat-78 [2009-01-16 15:51:38 +0000 UTC]

Patience is key. Don't try to get too close - for your safety and the wildlife's, too. Try not to stress the animals. Don't try to get their attention as that can stress them, and often that results in them leaving. With the wrong type of wildlife that can result in them attacking. Sit, watch, wait, shoot. It's really a lot like actual hunting, and I use many of the same tactics and strategies for stalking with my camera that I do when hunting with a rifle.
