Description I'm so glad I can finally post this! This is a digital painting (done with a an old Wacom tablet in Photoshop) I did for Tyler Baptist's company, Videonomicom. They are releasing the made-in-Saskatchewan classic insane road movie "Ryan's Babe" on VHS and, soon, on DVD. I was going for a sort of "1980s/1990s sex comedy" look here (kinda like "Porky's") and this painted style is far, FAR outside my comfort zone so, although there are still some issues, I was glad it turned out as well as it did. Check out Videonomicon at the link below, and buy a copy of "Ryan's Babe" while they last!

I didn't, but I sure knew it deserved too. I think it's actually maybe even CRAZIER than "the Room" in many ways. So cool that is was shot here.

It is nuts and very random! One of the baffling films I've ever seen.

No doubt about it ... and I've been searching out insane, obscure, low budget movies for 40 years!

It's an epic search. I'm told one called After Last Season is very much in that category.

This looks very 80's sex comedy authentic.Β  I love the nonchalant "Hey, I didn't even know I was in a movie poster, but whatever!" poses that they're striking.Β  Very accurate.

yeah, starting to feel like drawing again..but im just so tired after kids goto sleep.
i just ordered a couple of books about drawing and techniques etc.. so even if i dont draw i still try to learn.
best way is to actually draw..but i cant force it if i'm too tired : )

This turned out looking great, Huw, and from just seeing the thumbnail in my message center, I've got the "80s/90s sex comedy look" you went for!

Huwman In reply to DiegoTripodi [2014-07-20 23:20:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot, Diego. This was just so, SO far out on my usual style and comfort zone that I was glad to get it done even this well - although I still see a lot of "issues". I started out trying to do it like pencils and precise inks I'm used to, but had to get into a completely different mindset, which I was finally really understanding toward the end. Even old dogs like me can sometimes learn some new tricks! I appreciate the support!

DiegoTripodi In reply to Huwman [2014-07-21 00:05:06 +0000 UTC]

I can totally understand that, Huw! That type of rendering you came up here, as in painting, seems so hard for me to achieve, particularly when one is so used to having lines containing the colors.

I especially like what you did with the faces, but also the hands-- I wouldn't know where to start in order to achieve that!

A couple of days ago I finished a job where I had to draw these characters with a tiny body and a big head, and couldn't use much black (which is what I would usually do), it had absolutely nothing to do with my usual stuff, and like you said, I had to get into a different mindset in order to solve that work.

And I agree these experiences can be very good in that one learns stuff that wouldn't when working in their comfort zone (and I don't think there's an age limit to learn stuff), but at the same time, I've got to admit that at a certain point I couldn't help but thinking "oh man, I hope this is over soon!". I had the art director on the phone this Friday telling me that the job was finally approved, and I felt like if I won the World Cup or something... "at long least!"

Huwman In reply to DiegoTripodi [2014-07-21 02:44:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's nice to succeed at something that is a real challenge and I'm glad that's what you did. It can be a chore though ... you wouldn't even believe how long this painting took me! I kinda feel like I "get" it now though. I want to try painting some more stuff soon and seeing if I can switch on that mindset again or not. With painting, it feels so weird to tell myself, "just make mistakes and you can endlessly go over and refine things", since that's the complete opposite of doing ink work, especially with my tight (some would say too tight) style. I'm used to VERY carefully getting that precise line down in ink ... and I've been doing that for about 35 years so tricky to change!

DiegoTripodi In reply to Huwman [2014-07-22 02:06:32 +0000 UTC]

If you decide to try your hand again at painting, I'll definitely be looking forward to seeing what you come up with next-- I guess just getting started it's probably one of the hardest things, and here (while I don't know a thing about painting) it looks to me like a very promising start, Huw.

Makes total sense now you mention it-- a precise linework as that you get when inking seems like something very different from painting... but on a second thought, I'm thinking of Tamara Lempicka's paintings (which I love) and maybe those could be a good reference when thinking of how to blend precision and painting?

Huwman In reply to DiegoTripodi [2014-07-22 06:05:33 +0000 UTC]

She was that art deco painter, right? If that's the one I'm thinking of, yeah, she was great. Some painters are definitely high precisionΒ  - Todd Schorr, for one example - but even when the end result is precise, there's still that ability to just paint over top if one makes mistake and that's so different from inking. Mind you, this only applies to fairly opaque paints. Watercolour is very unforgiving, apparently. I do want to do some loose painting again if I get the chance. I'd love to do fake, old movie posters on a loose painted style (kinda like the one I did for MAN CLAM) but for now this crazy film we're shooting is taking all my time. Anyhow, good talking to you, Diego. Keep up the great work!

It would be funny if Ryan's Babe was Babe the pig and it was a beastiality flick. I've heard how big beastiality is in Saskatchewan. So how are you getting along with your knew dog? Have you got itΒ to lick off the bacon grease that youΒ always smear all over your body? You should film it then make a poster for it. Maybe you could call, "Hot for Huw" or, "Easy, Greasy, andΒ Sleazy". Go for it! Why dream it when you can be it, Huw?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Huwman In reply to WonderMuddle [2014-07-19 21:00:23 +0000 UTC]

...and "Ryan" could be Ryan O'Neil and the pig could die after they fall in love. Kind of like "Love Story" but with a lot more bacon. "Lard means never having to say you're sow-y" would be the tagline. Bestiality is one thing but I'm more concerned about necrophilia. How do you convince people that anal necrophilia is a dead end? Thank you for the fave and for keeping this comment section klassy.

Please enlighten me about this "klassy" for I'm aΒ rural recluseΒ and have strayed from the mainstream verbal vernacular many moons ago.

Huwman In reply to WonderMuddle [2014-07-20 20:07:11 +0000 UTC]

Well, it may be mostly a family thing but we often say someone is "C(K)lassy, with a capital 'K'". It essentially means "not classy" but with a pretense thereof. A good example might be a bridesmaid with perfect hair and makeup and an $800 dress ... and she's throwing up booze into a potted plant. An attempt at classiness derailed by innate "klassiness".
