Description Finally a Apex predator of the silvanian land. This sicagnathid is fast, strong and intelligent enough to kill even large scutoceratids like Pachyfrons or Scutoceras itself [link] . The animals hunt alone or in pairs. When they hunt in pairs, one animal always appear in front of the prey to scare it or to make it angry, it's partner waits several meters over the prey animal and waits for the best moment to spring on it's back.
The nest of these species are extremly huge, some have a diameter of 3 meter, they are build by more robust materials and are often laying on the ground or sitting in an big forked branch. Females give birth to 4 youngs.

I am fond of insect/insect looking wildlife so I am enjoying these creatures greatly.

I'm curious though what sort of weaponry are these fellas armed with. Usually a predator needs some fairly formidable weapons to deal with prey which is armored, such as insects. Either that or venom and a way to get it inside the armor.

Thank you very much
and sorry for the late replay.
The exoskeleton of silvanian pseudo-athropds has three layers. The first and most imortant is the Ganoid layer. Over this hard shell comes cartilage and blood vessels, and last but not least a thick, very elastic skin.
Predators tend to attack from behind on the tails which are mostly vulnerable, bust also the breathing holes and the sensing organs are often targets. Some bigger predators are in addition able to crush the armor of even bigger planteaters.

Thanks for the information

The exoskeleton and other facts make a lot of sense. From the notes on your creations I can see that the worlds environment is very different from modern earth. I really enjoy browsing your creations and reading the notes on the world and creatures.

I am reminded of prehistoric armored fishes, they had a heavily armored head and upper body, but a soft rear section a lot like your creatures.

the Placodermi were indeed a important inspiration for the basic design of the pseudo-athropods.

Nice Unique concept for a top predator, but the tail, it's very long and stretchy, so what's it for?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to vasix [2013-05-15 23:02:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks
In a world with giant trees and no land, it's important for a predator to be able to move in all directions, the tail helps at climbing.

Seems prehensile. It must be quite powerful despite its thinness, the animal's body itself looks pretty much on the large side

Well that's quite horrifying. As an extension of one of the questions above- if a human was attacked by one of these, and somehow didn't die immediately, could you convince it to leave you alone by attacking the breathing apperatus?

How do they kill their large prey? Their jaws don;'t really look menacing I mean I'd rather deal with them rather then "nutcrackers" legs

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to KingsOfEvilArt [2013-05-10 21:46:56 +0000 UTC]

You don't see it from this perspective, but the jaws are very sharp, sawed and have much power. The animal jump on the bakc of it's prey and dig into the flesh.
