Description It was only a matter of time until the chinese strata would spit out the first middle sized dromaeosaurid which definitely possess long  pennaceous  feathers.
Here another very quick painting on my green vacation paper
With such short arms, long feathers and robust jaws it's questionable if Zhenyuanlong used it's arms for the hunt. For me it's more likely that it used it's arms like a pheasant during the mating season, loud flapping and showing it's brightest colors to the females. Well here I try to imagine how that could look like

Here a example of a courting pheasant: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDLRrx…

roughly 5x15 cm, gouache and watercolors on paper

"Stability flapping" bei RPR wäre immer noch eine Option - gerade in Anbetracht der Länge der Hand- und Armschwingen im Vergleich zu der "harten" Anatomie drunter.

Und, wie üblich, großartiges Bild.

Danke

Es ist in der tat interessant zu sehen wie lang die Federn im Vergleich zum Arm sind, das lässt mich
darüber nachgrübeln wie das wohl bei anderen kurzarmigen Taxa wie Austroraptor war...

Very nice looking Zhen. I guess that dispaly could had been one of the main functions (tough maybe not the only one) of those lenghty arm feathers.

Indeed, a one purpose use is unlikely

Maybe it hunted small prey and used its foot talons to kill, like the modern secretarybird. In that way, it doesn't need to use its hands for prey grappling...

Yep, also my thoughts

What about the possibility of Zhenyuanlong using it's short arms to the extent of modern ostriches in order to aid in sharp turns during pursuit? It is possible that both of these uses were employed by Zhenyuanlong which would increase the usefulness of short arms. Wonderful reconstruction by the way.

Thanks, yes there was already grass, at least in a few places, but there weren't large grasslands. What you see here
is supposed to be a bunch of horsetails.

Spit out a fossil, now that's an understatement, no...what China has is a fossiliferous diarrhea...but a good fossiliferous diarrhea Yep, Zhenyuanlong doing courtship displays with its arms is much better.
