Description My latest drawing of Sherlock Holmes - much better than the last one, in my opinion. At least, more life-like. I really like his expression in this one. It reminds me of this one line in 'The Devil's Foot': "Nothing amused him more at the end of a successful case than to hand over the actual exposure to some orthodox official, and to listen with a mocking smile to the general chorus of misplaced congratulation."

Hahaha. What a brat. 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils. Maybe 45 minutes? I lost track of time.

BRILLIANT! BRILLIANT! BRILLIANT! Wow, this one is just as amazing as the other one! Haha, I love his expression...it's completely awesome!

Wow, brilliance cubed! It's the best I could've hoped for.

I'm glad you like it. I admit, I think this is my favorite out of my Holmes drawings. I'm partial to a good smirk.

I love smirks, too. Heheheh...especially when it's Holmes doing the smirking. I swear, I've been an addict from the moment I first began to read it. I love the Granada series. Quite frankly, I think Jeremy Brett made an awesome Holmes! What about you?

Ahahah... That's a touchy subject with me. I personally have never been a fan of Brett's portrayal of Holmes. And as a result, I've been chastised and even yelled at by other Sherlockians for my opinion! Which is annoying. But I just think he portrayed Holmes in a kind of spidery, unwholesome way, like there was something wrong with him. He made Holmes seem creepy, at least to me. Holmes is a lot of things - mischievous, eccentric, frustratingly arrogant - but never creepy.

So that's what I think. Don't throw tomatoes at me!

Aw, that's so mean! I really adore the Basil Rathbone version, too. He did an awesome job. But really, it's your opinion. Quite frankly, it took me a little bit to come around to Brett, but I finally did, since I watched it so much on YouTube, and conequently got banned from the laptop. And why on earth would I throw tomatoes at you? They're too yummy! And even if I did, I'd miss anyway. My aim is horrible. Just curious though. How'd he make Holmes seem creepy? Was it his random, slightly jumpy way of exclaiming things? Because that creeped me out a bit, too.

"His random, slightly jumpy way of exclaiming things." That pretty much sums it up! That, and his weird smiles and and disturbing little sniggers, and the whole air of madness lying dormant beneath the surface. I know, blasphemy! But that's just my opinion. I have no problem with other people liking him; he was a fantastic actor, after all. He just didn't fit MY image of Holmes.

I totally know! That's what creeps me out about him, but other than that...he was a good Holmes. And I have absolutely no problem with you being creeped out by him at all. It's your opinion, and you are entitled to it. Power to the right to opinions! Now that I'm calming down a bit...heheh...sorry, I was a tad(uderstatement of the century) hyper there. Anywho. How's your weekend going so far? I'm stuck designng the interior of two rooms in a honking huge house with a 1,500 to 5,000 dollar budget for math. Ugh...calculations...

Oh dear! That sounds like tons of fun. Math is definitely not my strong suit. I'm getting ready to go practice with my guitarist buddy. We're playing tonight at a local restaurant. I sing and he plays guitar and harmonica. Sometimes his eleven-year-old son plays backup violin! It's really fun, but I am SO not ready!

Oh, that's really cool! I used to play the flute, and managed to get thirf chair in band eighth grade. I would have been second, but some snobby girl just haaaaaaaad to take my spot...ugh. I think it was because she appeared more self-confident...I have no idea. Good luck though! I bet you'll do fine!

Aww! Snobby girls are indeed the worst. Anywho, Saturday night turned out great! We made pretty good tips, too, heh heh. We still haven't come up with a band name yet. Any ideas would be welcome!

MidgetPhantom In reply to iamfergie [2009-04-11 20:49:11 +0000 UTC]

I know, they are. That's awesome though! As for a band name...have you ever considered maybe something in a different language? Evanescence basically means to vanish, or dissipate, derived from the Latin evanescere. The cool thing about Latin is that it sounds awesome, and a lot of it is easy to figure out, since we have so many derivatives in our language. Otherwise, pick something, like a name or title perhaps, from a book or movie or something else that you enjoy. I hope that helped, at least a bit.

Yeah, it did! Thanks for the help! Although we're a pretty nerdy band that doesn't take itself very seriously, so something super dramatic or Latin probably wouldn't fit. Unless it's like, Aspergillus or something.

Lol! Oh wow. I can actually imagine that...well, then name yourselves whatever your...favorite food is, or something. What do you mainly play, by the way?

iamfergie In reply to MidgetPhantom [2009-04-25 03:42:55 +0000 UTC]

We play a lot of eighties music, actually! Like The Cure, Yaz, Men at Work, uh... What else? Some newer stuff, aka The Cranberries, and Dido, and Pink Martini. We have a pretty wide range.

Have to comment on this one too. Holmes is such a great character, and you did an awesome job capturing his smugness. He's quite the dapper fellow in your style too.

Nice use of the quote. I really need to read more Holmes.

iamfergie In reply to WonderDookie [2007-10-22 17:38:05 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I suppose Holmes is pretty smug. As for my "style", I just try to do whatever I can to get away from the image of Holmes in that absurd deerstalker. He may be eccentric, but he CAN dress himself. Anyway, thanks for the comment!

Nice! I like the eyes, especially.
I seem to fail so far with detailed pencil drawings. xDD I'm always too afraid to shade them properly. XD

Pshh, you and me both! You'd be surprised at how many portraits I've started that I friggin' ruined by shading them too darkly. ...Then again, no, don't be surprised. Very little of my art actually ends up here. But I'm glad you like it!
