Description cal anderson pk, seattle, wa.

had to shoot straight into the sun for this shot.
are there any tricks for that?
(had cam on lowest ISO and aperture as closed as possible)
anyway, just a fun one.

and thanks for your help
the shadows/highlights work did markedly improve it.

I'm always in awe of your work. You always seem to capture that one moment that seems unattainable. Each piece is so alive. It's obvious they aren't choreographed, so obtaining pictures like these is all about imperfection. If you had spent the time twiddling and moving, you moment would be gone. And it's the moment that makes the piece, not the exposure speed(although it can help).

well, it looks like you did a fine job anyway, even shooting straight at the sun: i like the overexposed sky and the light "leaking" over his figures, it gives a nice, almost mystical aura.

the only trick that comes to my mind is not to do that with digital cameras, at least not with the sun directly in the frame, they usually get some weird artifact.

that pose is absolutely phenomenal!! You captured it at the most perfect moment, and the title fits perfectly. It is a pity you had to shoot into the sun, the over-exposed sky doesn't help much, I may crop the photo down a bit, and perhaps have taken it with a bit shallower depth of field, just because the wide space of high detail around him draws away from him, but it can all be forgiven for such an incredible shot well done!

...and I need to write better critiques now, 'cause I friended at least three photographers. What do you look for in a picture?

frankly, i think your position/exposure combo and your decision NOT to use flash was the right one.

change position? yea, right. like this sort of thing is choreographed by the photographer.

use a flash? i'm sure you carry all your camera gear with you wherever you go.

it's not a damn studio or set-up shot, it's LIFE.

you saw it, you shot it, simple as that.

your experiences have taught you to make exposure and position decisions effeciently, quickly and correctly.

you're a pro.

well i'm far from being a pro, i'm forever learning new things about photography (always will), but damn hun, gotta say i love your spunk!
went back in my files to see if i had indeed made a shadows/highlights version but no. (i usu. make several versions and then decide
on the best). i don't think it occured to me since i normally use it to lighten dark images and not the other way around.
so look! you've opened an entirely new doorway for me. and no doubt it'll save my ass on numerous occasions to come.
thanks again for everything.

nice shot. if you're using CS2,are you familiar with the shawdow/highlights adjustment? it's an amazing tool for adjusting those almost-but-not-quite blown out areas (or blocked-up shadow areas) without affecting the overall tonality.

iamkatia In reply to skippysanchez [2006-11-08 20:03:13 +0000 UTC]

i do have CS2 but ended up using corel's 'clarify' option instead.
comparing the two versions, corel's was better.

TigerMoods In reply to carrieOnagreenhill [2006-11-13 13:48:00 +0000 UTC]

i agree that it is a great picture as it is but it is a good jump and seeing the full shadow would give a better visualisation of the height. we could tell it if only the picture was taken with a wider angle and cropped the way it is now. anyway, as we all agreed, great picture
