Arthur Kirkland was by no means 'perfect', if such a thing did exist.

Arthur glared at Francis from across the room. Though that gaze would have been enough to deter even the bravest (or perhaps the most foolish) suitors, Francis was never put off. There was something intoxicating about the Brit and chasing him because Francis knew one false move would deal his heart a crippling blow.

Then why did he chase him?

He knew that Arthur wielded a sharp tongue and was not shy about using it either. The weapons in his verbal arsenal included little jibes that would dig under any sane person's skin but Francis wasn't fazed; in fact he delighted in returning the jibes in good humour. Francis simply refused to let the insults hurt him.

He knew that Arthur was damaged. The last time they had met in a battle had been when Alfred had left him. Francis had found the Brit crouched in the muck, rain pounding down around him, riddled with injuries and sobbing wretchedly. Francis had done his best but ever since then Arthur would break down when it rained. Some parts of him could never be healed.

He knew the Brit had been hurt so many times he found it difficult to love, to trust.

Whenever it seemed Francis had made progress, he would find Arthur had changed his whole game. He would go from wanting to snuggle up and cuddle on the couch to wanting no physical contact at all, all because every time he had ever loved or opened his heart, it had been shattered and Arthur could never trust someone completely without worrying.

So why did Francis still chase after him? Why did he want Arthur to be the one he woke up to every morning and the one he would fall asleep next to every night? Arthur was riddled with faults and he was always too proud for his own good. Why did Francis love someone who was so… imperfect?

Maybe because a beautiful thing never was perfect…
