Bertholdt x Reader x Reiner [ Modern!AU ]
Lessons was just about to start when Bertholdt finally made his way into the classroom, his bag slung over his shoulders and a couple of books and binders held in his arm. As he walked to his seat towards the back of the room, he glanced at his watch and let out a small sigh of relief.
Putting his stuff down, the sounds of familiar laughter made him look to the tables beside him where Reiner and [Name] sat. A bitter feeling welled in his chest when he saw the way the girl laughed so freely when she was with Reiner, but he pushed down those feelings, telling himself that her happiness was what mattered most.
“Hey Bertl! Why’re you so late?”
Looking over the top of [Name]’s head; Bertholdt gave his best friend a sheepish smile. “I overslept.”
Reiner’s boisterous laughter was interrupted when the teacher entered the class and promptly shushed the brawny boy. A couple of hushed jibes were exchanged between the two besides him and Bertholdt sighed, taking out a pen as the teacher began the lesson.
“Psst!”
Bertholdt turned to [Name], who leaned over to him and whispered, “You don’t usually oversleep. Are you feeling alright?”
Her concern made a small smile tug at his face and he assured her it was nothing. The relief that overcame her features made his heart pause for a fraction of a second.
It was times like this that would bring his hopes up. Maybe, just maybe…
…there would be a possibility that she felt the same way he did.
~~
Lessons rolled by slowly and by the time it was lunch period, everyone was more than eager to get out of their classrooms. Alongside Reiner and [Name], Bertholdt made his way through the crowd of student in the hallways when a large banner overhead caught his eye.
SENIOR PROM
CLASS OF 2015
Prom had been the talk of all the third years recently, and to be completely honest, Bertholdt had been thinking a lot about it too. If senior year was supposed to be the most memorable part of high school, then shouldn’t prom night be one of the highlights of high school life?
“Hey [Name],” Reiner slung his arm over the girl’s shoulder, inching closer to her as he asked, “Who’re you going to prom with?”
Bertholdt froze when Reiner asked her that question. It was obvious he would ask her to go with him, and even though Bertholdt didn’t want to believe it, she might just agree.
“What’s it to ya?” [Name] laughed, shrugging off Reiner’s burly arm.
“Well, if you have no one to go with, how about I be your date?”
Not able to stand it any longer, Bertholdt stopped in his tracks. “Ah… I forgot something in class. You guys go ahead. I’ll catch up with you later.”
Before his friends could say another word, he turned on his heel and started walking away. Bertholdt ended up in the courtyard, and he took a seat on the bench, his head hung low.
He had always known that Reiner harbored feelings for [Name] too, and even though he treasured his friendship with both of them dearly, Bertholdt inevitably found himself drawn to the [h/c] haired girl too. Reiner had always been the more confident one though; that one charismatic guy whom people looked up to, so it was no surprise to him that [Name] would be attracted to Reiner too, considering how close they always seem.
Sighing deeply, he tried to shake off the image of them being together.
I don’t want to know…
~~
“Bertholdt! Wait-“
About to go after the tall brunette, [Name] was stopped when Reiner held onto her arm.
“Relax, he’s just grabbing something from class.”
“But he’s obviously upset about something. I’d better go check on him!”
“At least answer my question, [Name]… “ Surprised at his change of tone, she turned to face Reiner. “Do you wanna go to prom with me?”
She opened her mouth to respond, but she couldn’t find the right words to say. “Reiner… ”
Judging by her expression, he could pretty much deduce what she was thinking. “You want to go with Bertholdt, don’t you?”
“How… how did you know?” She asked, shocked that Reiner saw right through her.
“Both of you are so bloody dense, I swear…” Ruffling her hair, he laughed. “It’s so obvious at the way you look at each other.
“Go look for him.”
[Name] looked at Reiner, hesitance written all over her face. Reiner gave her a gentle shove in the direction Bertholdt walked off to.
“I gave it my all, didn’t I? Now I just want my friends to be happy.”
“Sorry, Reiner…” She hugged him.
Returning the gesture, he let out a soft sigh. “I’ll still get a chance to dance with you right?”
“Of course."

By the time [Name] found Bertholdt, lunch was almost over and she was panting from running all over the school to look for him. He was sitting on a bench beneath a large tree, hunched over, looking deep in thought.
"Bertholdt!" She called out, making the boy to look up at her in shock.
"[Name]? What are you doing here? I thought you were with Reiner…?"
"I was looking for you," she stood in front of him, catching her breath. "I thought you went back to class…"
"I… wanted to give you and Reiner some alone time…"
"Why would you do that?"
Bertholdt nearly flinched from the sharpness of her voice and he lowered his gaze, mumbling. "Frankly, I didn't want to see the two of you together together… I know I'm being selfish but I can't bear it anymore. Sor-"
Before he could apologize, [Name] cut him off. "Idiot…"
Her hands were fisted at her sides as she continued, "the person I want to go with; the person I like… isn't Reiner.
“…It’s you…”
His head snapped up at her confession and he stood up, taking a step closer to her.
“Are you telling the truth?”
“I love Reiner as my best friend; like a brother. But the person I’ve always been in love with is you.”
A hopeful look lit up in his eyes and he asked softly, “in that case, will you be my girlfriend?”
Bertholdt blushed furiously when the girl threw herself into his arms, her face pressed against his chest. He could smell the faint scent of the shampoo she used, and as he returned the hug, a smile reached his features at her response.
“All you had to do was just ask, and I’ll always say yes.”
