Description I know I said I wasn't going to upload much in the Eclipse era, and I'm actually still holding myself to that. But given that Artri.se is still at its glacial pace, I may as well upload it now and pray to God that I'll be able to transfer this by the end of the year (Artri.se couldn't come soon enough!)

Part I (You are here)
Part II

As you may have noticed, Mississippi has officially retired the state flag that they have used since 1894, a controversial design that had made it the last state to display the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia (what people usually talk about [1] when they think of the Confederate flag). Given its use as the banner of a country that had fought to defend the institution of chattel slavery, and as both a rallying point by despicable figures and groups like the KKK and numerous other white supremacists and as a tool of intimidate African-Americans throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, it is to no surprise that in the wake of protests and riots after the murder of George Floyd, the 1894 flag is far too contentious to retain as the defining symbol of the state.

Of course, flags are supposed to be the defining symbols of the present, to inspire and instill the values of the community it represents in the present, and to communicate a message in the future. What does a banner featuring the flag of a nation that tried to defend the right to keep other human beings in bondage (betraying our country in the process) mean for a state that has one of the largest African-American populations in the country? Nothing positive, you would say. And so that's what I've done.

If you notice on the top, this is the first part of my flag build, showing the finished product which took me almost the entire afternoon and evening just designing the whole thing. The second is a "construction sheet" detailing the meaning behind every little detail in the design. Both of those I had submitted to the government-appointed commission to redesign the state flag, after making sure it complies with all of the criteria as set forth in the flag legislation.

[UPDATE] 28 July, 2020 -  Minor corrections made to the position of the magnolia and motto.

[1] Despite popular misconceptions, it was not by itself the official flag of the Confederate States. It's actually rather complicated.
