I'm not agree with you. The zoos and aquariums aren't the best solution for the animals, their place is in nature not in these structures.

Yes, these places aren't the worst solution for them, but they aren't the solution to solve problem.
Animals should be free to live their life in to the wild, not in these structures.
In their territory and us we should respect and protect them, the life of the animals inside the zoos and delphinariums isn't a real live for them.

Why because they have more room ? Is that .. literally the only reason ?
You know we're animals too right ? Everyone benefits from some shelter.
If they're not being abused or neglected, then they're fine. A lot of those animals
had their habitats destroyed or were injured for such an extended period of time
that they really don't have a home to go back to. It is selfish of you to just look at it
and think "oh humans have these animals in 'small' areas, animals that can swim/run [#] miles per hour,Β
how horrible, unnatural !!!" when that is not the case all the time. In many cases, the animals see the
workers as their family. and you wouldn't just abandon your child. I'm not saying 100% all facilities are good
but you can't make such a generalization and assume that all captive animals are miserable just because
their species is not domesticated.Β

ilaaaria In reply to Buniis [2017-07-16 08:20:15 +0000 UTC]

No, the problem is not the fact that animals live in these small structures , the real problem and that in these places don't respect what is their natural life: their rhythms in nature, their interactions ( Prey / predator) or between the members of their group. Animals do not have any sort of individual choice both positive and negative, this is because even if they "live" in a healthy environment is not their natural environment because it is artificial.
I'm not be against zoos and dolphins only because the animals don't have many space to swim, run or fly. I'm against these structures for many reasons...

Like I said, it depends on the place. and what's with people and romanticizing what's natural ? Natural can be good, yeah but non-natural can also be good. and vice versa.

Many zoos and aquariums are beautiful places but the captivity is never good, and isn't the solution to solving various problems like the extinction of various species.

Reintroducing an animal born in captivity is not impossible but it is really very difficult...

lol no.Β
Even with domestic animals you see it.
You could have a bounded groups of animals,
and then one gets sick and has to be away from the group for a while
and no matter what you do, the group will NEVER accept them back. Not always but it happens.Β
Go ahead and try putting a captive animal back into the wild. See how the rest of nature treats it.
It's a vicious cycle and blaming humans for it isn't going to solve anything.

Unfortunately the dolphinarium aren't at all helpful to the animals, these places don't teach at us anything from the biological and natural point.
And also how the zoos and aquariums, people cannot see the real behavior from the animals because they are in an environment that isn't theirs.

The real and only reason why the zoo existing is the economic reason, if you really want to help the animals, we should help the many associations toprotect animals in their natural environment.

True, they were at one point, but most of the zoos are working to being better at taking care of their animals.

Most of the zoos nowadays HAVE to be acredited by teh AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) , which garuntees thay they are treated exceptionally well.
(I should know - I work for one of them!)

As I said, I do not have doubt that those who have your work don't love animals, I am against those who use animals for their interest and unmasks as love.
Why the people open the zoos and aquariums and don't spend the money to protect the animals in their natural environment?

QuantumMirage In reply to ilaaaria [2012-09-01 04:25:08 +0000 UTC]

I usually don't like to get wrapped up in these debates but I just can't let this slide.
Zoo's are the main reason we even have some animal anymore. If it wasn't for zoo's, the Przewalski's horse would be extinct. So would the Mexican Gray Wolf, but because of breeding and reintroduction programs we now have those animals back in the wild.
Zoo's are the number one resource for education about natural environments. They connect people to animals and provide them with ways to protect them. They provide the resources needed for people to help.
Zoo's donate thousands a year to protect species like the Amur Leopard, Sumatran Orangutan, the Ocelot, and so many more. They are some of the biggest backers when it comes to recovery projects.
The people who work there put their blood, sweat, and tears into protecting and caring for those animals. Educators, veterinarians, keepers, and even administration staff are all there for a reason and that is to help the animals they all love.

As I said I don't doubt that those who work in a zoo does not love animals, but I'd rather see that the animals live in their natural enviroment insted in the zoo.
Many zoos use animals to make money, they make hybrids that do not exist in nature.
Why we have to take the animals away from their natural environment where they live instead of protecting?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QuantumMirage In reply to ilaaaria [2012-09-02 04:30:28 +0000 UTC]

All AZA zoos are not allowed to purposely breed hybrids, such as white tigers and king cheetahs.
Animals are very rarely taken from the wild now, almost all animals in zoos are captive bred unless they are seriously injured and unable to survive in the wild.

Money is a necessary evil when it comes to zoos. What will pay for their food? In most zoos, all entrance fees go to feeding and caring for the animals.

There are more to zoos than what you as a guest see. Behind the scenes is a much larger story. These animals aren't just being kept in cages. Most animals have large natural exhibits, with spacious night-houses that people never see.
All zoo animal get what is called enrichment, which varies in type, but all of it is used to enrich the animals lives. It could be various new scents spread through an exhibit, to give a tiger a new experience. It could be a new puzzle feeder for the orangutan, to challenge it's mind in new and great ways. It brings great ways for animals to express all of their natural behaviors and keeps them happy and entertained. I could go on and on listing the rest, but then I would be here all night!

Zoos do great work in protecting natural environments. They teach valuable lessons about the ecosystem and what the average person can do to help it. As Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

You and I both love animals, which is why we are having this discussion. Your distrust of zoos is based in fact. Zoos used to be terrible places, but they have improved. They have grown into something so much more than what they used to be. Its just hard for some people to look past the 'cage' and see all the wonderful things within.

I know it's not as good as the wild, and no zoo is perfect, but they try their hardest to be as close to perfect as possible.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ilaaaria In reply to QuantumMirage [2012-09-02 12:04:25 +0000 UTC]

I understand what you're saying, and I know that the zoo over the years have been improved for the benefit of the animals that live there.
But you have to admit that everything revolves around money and in fact when a puppy born, it goes around the world on interner and everyone rushes to watch.
It is true that many animals living in captivity can not survive in the wild, but is sufficient re-educate them step by step, as has been shown in many documentaries, and in one of them telling the story of a family of white lions.
But one thing that really can not stand are the shows with the dolphins, killer whales or seals.
As I always say I prefer see the animals free in their natural environment than in a structure that has created man, is not a natural thing...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QuantumMirage In reply to ilaaaria [2012-09-02 15:23:31 +0000 UTC]

Now that really depends on what facility you are going to. Places like Seaworld and some zoos are pretty bad when it comes to that. However I am happy to say that is changing in some zoos as well.

My local zoo has 'shows' (though I hesitate to call them that) where the only thing the animals do are just natural behaviors or necessary movements to enable a vet to safely examine them. The elephants can lift their feet for the keepers so they can check for scratches and trim their nails. The sea lion opens it mouth so they can check their teeth. Then there is the target training, where the animal must follow a 'target' so the keepers can see if they are moving freely and not limping or hurting in any way.
And no animal is every forced to do anything. Once during the sea lion program, the sea lion refused to follow the target, so it ended there.
If they are going to be doing training regardless of time or day, why not invite guests to come watch and learn about the animal. Every program here has an educator as well, who comes to tell everyone about the animal.

As for the reintroduction, zoos do a lot of that. As a matter of fact, I believe a zoo just recently rehabilitated some orangutans to be reintroduced back into the wild.
I believe I talked about
the Przewalski's Horse before. It actually went extinct in the wild, but zoos were able to breed and reintroduce them.

A lot of zoos have animals that are ready to be reintroduced but because of lack of natural environment or too much politics, they are unable to go.
I believe we would both prefer to see them in the wild, but sometimes that just can't happen.

Almost all things these days revolve around money, sadly. Zoos have to be especially careful because if they lose people coming in, they can no longer care for the animals.
Most zoos do take advantage of when a baby is born, because people naturally love baby animals. It gets people in the zoo, gets revenue for care, and gives people the chance to learn and connect with the animals.
Though I don't like them doing this, I understand why.

All I ask is don't lump zoos together. I know there are still some pretty terrible zoos out there, but there are some amazing ones as well.
