Description The idea for this was inspired by one of my favorite songs, Clean Bandit's "Telephone Banking," about a man who is unsuccessfully trying to call his former lover, Grace. While she's moved on with her life as a cello instructor in Japan, he's convinced that he's moved on too, distracting himself from his lingering feelings for her.

The original electronic version [link] Β is fantastic, but I especially like the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra version. [link] Β The blend of strings and woodwinds has a smooth, flowing, almost Japanese sound at times, which, intentional or not, complements the story perfectly.

Anyway, about the painting itself. I wanted to practice watercolor background washes, with a misty, foggy feel, so I blended a warm gray with layers of yellow, magenta, blue, and a little green for atmosphere (neon lights, maybe). Also I painted streaks of water here and there while the paint was wet, for drizzling rain. All and all, I'm very pleased with the outcome!

Beautiful painting. The idea and composition are incredible. It's so nice to see such a creative and fascinating still life! The painting looks masterful.

Thank you so much!
Let's see... The sketch took about an hour to shape and refine. The painting was two hours, because there weren't many fine details or layers to worry with. I did use a hairdryer to dry the paint between washes, which saved me 30 mins easy. Watercolor is a breeze compared with colored pencil work!Β
