Geography overview
Saint Lucia is one of many small land masses composing the insular group known as the Windward Islands. which is a small island group composed of coral and sand, St. Lucia is a typical Windward Island formation of volcanic rock that came into existence long after much of the region had already been formed. St. Lucia's physical features are notable. Dominated by high peaks and rain forests in the interiorits soft sandy beaches, and its magnificent natural harbors. The steep terrain also accentuates the many rivers that flow from central St. Lucia to the Caribbean. Fertile land holdings, which support banana farming, are scattered throughout the island.
History
St. Lucia’s first known inhabitants were the Arawaks, believed to have come from northern South America in 200-400 A.D. By 800 AD the Arawaks’ culture had been superseded by an early Amerindian group known as the Caribs. The Caribs called the island ‘Iouanalao’ and ‘Hewanorra’, meaning ‘Island of the Iguanas’. Numerous archaeological sites on the island have produced specimens of the Arawaks’ well-developed pottery. Caribs gradually replaced Arawaks during the period from 800-1000 A.D.
The history of the island's European discovery is a bit hazy. It was long believed that Columbus had discovered St. Lucia in 1502 but the first European settlement was by Francois le Clerc (aka Jambe de Bois, or Wooden Leg). Around 1600 the Dutch arrived, establishing a fortified base at Vieux Fort. However, two attempts by English colonists, in 1605 and 1639, ended in failure as the resident Caribs forced the colonists to flee. By the mid 17th century the French arrived and ‘purchased’ the island for the French West India Company. Anglo-French rivalry for the island continued for more than a century and a half, with the island changing hands a total of 14 times!!
The English, with their headquarters in Barbados, and the French, based in Martinique, found St. Lucia attractive after the sugar industry developed in the 18th century. In 1778, the British launched their first invasion effort at the ‘Battle of Cul de Sac’. Britain eventually triumphed, with France permanently ceding St. Lucia in 1815 under the Treaty of Paris. In 1838, St. Lucia was incorporated into the British Windward Islands administration, headquartered in Barbados. This lasted until 1885, when the capital was moved to Grenada.
Increasing self-governance has marked St. Lucia’s 20th-century history. A 1924 constitution gave the island its first form of representative government, with a minority of elected members in the previously all-nominated legislative council. Universal adult suffrage was introduced in 1951, and elected members became a majority of the council. Ministerial government was introduced in 1956, and in 1958 St. Lucia joined the short-lived West Indies Federation, a semi-autonomous dependency of the United Kingdom. When the federation collapsed in 1962, following Jamaica’s withdrawal, a smaller federation was briefly attempted. After the second failure, the United Kingdom and the six windward and leeward islands–Grenada, St. Vincent, Dominica, Antigua, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, and St. Lucia–developed a novel form of cooperation called associated statehood.
As an associated state of the United Kingdom from 1967 to 1979, St. Lucia had full responsibility for internal self-government but left its external affairs and defence responsibilities to the United Kingdom. This ended on February 22, 1979, when St. Lucia gained full independence. The island continues to cooperate with its neighbours through the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM), the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), the East Caribbean Common Market (ECCM), the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), and the Regional Security System (RSS).
Relations
America:
Canada:
Canada has had close relations with saint Lucia even long before saint Lucia gained independence. After Independence in 1979 diplomatic relations were fully established. Canada’s good bilateral relations with Commonwealth Caribbean countries are from a significant Caribbean diaspora in Canada, long-standing regional commercial links, and a long history of Canadian support for the region. Nearly 15,000 Canadian tourists visit Saint Lucia on an annual basis.
France
United Kingdom
Taiwan & China:
Saint Lucia maintains relations with relations with Taiwan which had surprised the government of china since they expected the newly formed government to side with china. Tho Saint Lucia wishes to maintain relations with both Taiwan and china. Saint Lucia has actually been jumping between the two countries in terms of diplomatic relations. St Lucia held relations with Taiwan from 1984 to 1997, with China from 1997 to 2006 and again with Taiwan since 2006. Both Taiwan and China have sought to establish alliances with Caribbean countries in recent years. Taiwan currently has 23 diplomatic allies, five of them in the Caribbean, including the Dominican Republic, Haiti, St Kitts and Nevis and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
