Description One of the not-so-well-known films from my childhood; some times called, The Sea Prince and the Fire Maiden (and other variations).
I adored this movie. It was like a fantasy retelling of Romeo and Juliet. There is a bit of Little Mermaid and Greek mythology in it, too. It had some silly moments, some sad moments, and a bitter-sweet love story.

Malta and Sirius are the names of these two; he is a water child, the heir to Oceanus (I believe he may be adopted). She is a fire child, the daughter of Hyperia.
Water children are forbidden from going to the surface, especially during the day because if sunlight touches them, they die. Fire children die if they fall in the water, and usually avoid it... except for Malta, he keeps a sacred flame burning by the shore. It is her duty to guard it, make sure it never goes out, and keep the flames beautiful. Sirius, in an effort to prove his bravery, ventures into the forbidden zone, and is drawn to the surface by the light of Malta's flame one night.
The two are fascinated by each other, especially since the stories they have heard depict the opposite race as savages. They fall in love and continue to see one another despite their friends warnings. Duty and destiny get in the way, and a catastrophe nearly destroys them both. They somehow find a way to remain together, and even heal the fighting between their people.

They way they look in my drawing is a bit different than in the film. I was playing around with the designs.
Enjoy~

It was made in 1981, and a Japanese-Australian-New Zealand  film by Sanrio.
The original story was by Shintaro Tsuji.

Cool picture! I didn't know "Sea Prince and the Fire Child" was an Australian-New Zealand film.

Heh, I didn't either until a few years ago when I looked it up. Technically, it is considered "anime", which really surprised me.
And thank you!

No problem! There should be more fanart for this movie.

If you're interested, I drew some too : joyhorse13.deviantart.com/art/…
