Description Undulatus Asperatus, please READ about them. They are NOT wall clouds, though they are some of the most intimidating clouds to witness firsthand.
Sorry about the bulldozed ground clutter, but these clouds showed up so quickly I had little time to clear it out of the foreground.

This is a magnificent shot! Yes, if you could have arranged for the bulldozers not to clutter your shot, it would have been nice e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Wink)"/>, but you still scored an excellent image.
I'm not a photographer, so I won't be discussing film speeds, exposure times and the like. This is strictly a layman's perspective. That said, here's my perspective:
I don't know how you could have lit the trees any more in a wide space like this (and on short notice) but if you could have, a tiny boost in the color of the trees would have added a nice contrast; green against the blue-gray sky. Even the darker green serves to emphasize the sky's seeming fury, as well as providing a sense of scale. Despite the bulldozing, the brown vegetation adds some fine contrast with the green treeline (and provides still more scale).
As for the clouds themselves: I'd say you nailed them. The otherworldly texture, mixing fairly sharp edges with smooth, downy ribbons, forces the eye to wander about, sampling everything and sampling again. I'm curious to know if the tiny, cloud-colored dot in the upper third is a cloud or not. If a cloud, seeing such a tiny shape amongst such huge formations only adds to the marvel. If something else, can you shed light on it?
This isn't the first picture of the sky I've ever seen, of course. I also own a fascinating book titled, The Handbook of Unusual Natural Phenomena. That said, this isn't the dazzling shot of lightning or a tornado you see on the Weather Channel. You concocted a fine work on remarkably short notice, and one I've never seen in my life -- thus, the small deductions but overall high score.
Nice job!

Ye gods, I cannot thank you enough for that review! I literally grabbed my camera and did what I could in less than 5 minutes. My last experience with these clouds was so brief, and I left the ISO so high the pictures were disappointing for any detail, I shot these as big as I could with different settings.
That dot? I am going to go back through the other shots and hope that isn't a camera spot.... otherwise, it has to be a UFO. o.O Really, I can't thank you enough for the creative critique!!

Wow, that was nice of you! I worried it might seem harsh, though I try to be honest yet constructive. Still, under the circumstances it's an achievement and deserves celebration, even though you could have lit more candles for the cake .
Experience teaches. You may wish this was better, but just think: your reflexes will be all the sharper next time something eye-catching happens, and then who knows what amazing shot you'll take?

Wow! We get those ones too, round here. They mean some *fierce* winds!

Really? They are 'not' common here at all, and actually are more dreadful looking than they are, but it takes the right combo of air masses to happen. I imagine your location on the globe is probably prone to more colliding weather that would make these than the center of the USA.

The roaring 40's, yes. Apparently something to do with how the Earth rotates, or something like that! Or maybe just with sitting on a fault line between a warm ocean and a cold ocean...

I do love cloud photos, it always an endless field to work with. ANd it's never the same. These are always the most fun, but the shortest lived ones.

I never tire looking at their endless variations. I do a lot of driving, dropping off and picking up kiddies and cloud watching is so easy to do while doing that... though perhaps I should keep my eyes on the road more often
