Description So here's a Chequred Nettle, another Heavyweight. So for this guy I went with a Chequred Skipper butterfly for inspiration. I have the feeling Novik used quite a few butterflies for dragon breed inspiration and considering that the Chequred Skipper used to live in England (still found in Scotland) and the Chequred Nettle is from the british isles too it seemed a good fit. Not quite happy with the way the wings came out here but maybe I'll get it right next time.

Chequred Nettles were created by Naomi Novik and are from her Temeraire series.

Thank you for the new arts !! They are very amazing ! However i've a little question <.< (You've to reply because it's only thank you that i'm reading and loving this series XD) I'm actually reading the book 5 (with some difficulties because it's not translated in my language) but one chapter at time i'm managing to do it. However i was surprised/in trouble about a thing of dragon's size <.<
In the book i can read how Gentius (a Longwing) some times lay "on the back" of Requiescat (a Regal Copper) but... i was almost sure that Longwing were a pretty large breed of dragons even if (i think) still on the middle-weight class.
Another thing i would like to know v.v (sorry, it's SPOILER) it's because i'm writing a fanfiction set during the italian indipendence war of 1860 (sadly only in my language) : at the end of the last book you've read... how it is the political/social situation of dragons in England/Europe? They've got pavilions and cooked food, ok, but have the right to vote and right to possess money? In the stories i'm writing i suppose that these last two weren't obtained in the italian peninsula and i'm really in doubt about the possible description of Dragons of the State of the Church. v.v

Glad to hear you're enjoying the series!
Yes Longwings are on the larger side of the middleweight class, I think a Regal Copper is one of the only dragons that could have a Longwing ride on their back. Gentius would probably have to tuck his wings tight and lay straight along Requiescat's spine to not interfere with his wings but I think its possible. Generally the Longwings kinda get ranked along side the Heavyweights because their acid makes them so dangerous, and the dragons rank themselves by size and ability, so people tend to forget that they are smaller.
As for the political situation (Warning: Spoiler!) 'Tongues of Serpents' took place in Australia and there was no real contact with England/Europe so I can only tell you about the end of 'Victory of Eagles.' It seems to me that the dragon rights campaign had it's main success with the french. Napoleon was remodeling the Paris streets, building pavilions, providing cooked varied food, wages, and military rank/promotions. I would guess that this would only spread to the parts of europe that were under Napoleon's control and even then be strongest in France where he had the biggest influence and ability to enforce. I don't recall anything about voting yet (I highly doubt voting was encouraged under Napoleon even with the human populace) and as for money I think the dragons still preferred golden chains and gemstones over coin (one French dragon mentioned he had been paid three golden chains and a ruby). I'm not sure how much power Napoleon held over Italy at the time but I agree that the church would probably put up roadblocks to dragon liberty. Hope this helps with your story!

Thank you for the data x3 I already knew that they were going to win XD (it was pretty obvious of course v.v or the series had to turn into a very unexpected plot XD). I knew also about Toungue of Serpents in Austrialia, and i imagined part of what you said but it's interesting and it open even more debates <.< Mainly because my story is set into a time when started Working Struggle in Europe and we MAY suppose that along the struggles of workers, decline of aristocracy, rise of bourgeoisie and so one, we may imagine an increasing of better opinions about dragons and more claims from some dragons and maybe some pro-dragons human too.
A thing i've discovered i should add in my story it's that (i've read) Africans of Mokhachane (i LOVE her x3) raided Mediterranean.
Another point i've to face it's about "Little" '800 nations, often with relationships with larger countries. I'm writing so "little" Air Corps.
Another thing i would like to know if someone has wrote a real calculation of HOW MANY dragons there are.
I THINK that 200-300 in british active service + 200 in breeding grounds for england can be ok, right? (i THINK excluding the ones in Canada, Australia..)
I remember that it was said that France have more... and if they use dragons from breeding ground they are 1000.
For this i think that littler countries that are the background of the story (Reign of Sardinia, Reign of Two Sicilies and State of Church) can have 150-200 in active service + 50-100 in breeding grounds (without fire-breathing or acid-spitter)
And about State of Church i had some troubles because i don't think that they morally could have at that time an high opinion of dragons (being reptile-snake creature) but still they had a military force and i really liked the idea of creating white/golden dragons with an appearence designed mainly for parades XD
However my story it's set with Napoleon III, but i try to not speak about what may have happened v.v (if and when Napoleon I was defeated).

I'm really not sure about the total numbers of dragons per country. It might have been mentioned but if so I didn't catch it.

I do kinda like the idea of a white/gold parade dragon- kinda like the original Pope mobile right? A way for him to be highly visible and super protected. Although from my understanding of the books none of the dragons seem to really understand the human fascination with religion. But each nationality of dragons could hold different values, like how the Prussian dragon's hold drills and regulation above all else. And now that I think of it I think there were dragons in the Ottoman Empire in "Black Powder War" observing prayer times. Either way it seems like an interesting niche to explore.

Wonderful! I must especially applaud you for the colouring you chose - the Chequered Nettle has been drawn with Purple and White stripes for a while now, ever since it was first drawn that way by a fan artist, and we now know it looks more like...well, how you've drawn it!

Your work and others like it should get rid of such an inconsistency forever! Great work!

Yeah, I spent some time considering the colors. Kulingile hatched out grey and brown and I could attribute the grey to the black/cream Parnassian which leaves brown for the Chequred Nettle. Later he grows into a "handsome pattern of gold scales" which I would think also came from the Nettle. So when I google image searched 'chequred' for color pattern ideas and the Chequred Skipper butterfly popped up with its brown and gold colors it seemed like the perfect fit.

I agree that too often people will base their sketches on another persons just because it's already been done even when there is no evidence in the books supporting it.

Yeah, I think I used the same logic when I rewrote the Chequered Nettle wiki page. There's also another "Chequered" animal with similar colouring (a snake or something), but it's almost certainly the butterfly; Naomi Novik said in an interview that she got the names for a number of the dragon breeds from birds and butterflies. In fact, I just remembered we made a list on the Wiki of what each breed could be named for ( [link] ), perhaps it will be of use to you?
