Hm, what is tree agate? I have a donut shaped bead of the same material and I can't tell if its a composite or dyed or etc.

I'm pretty sure that tree agate is actually a type of natural agate. I don't know if it's valuable enough for people bothering to make synthetic versions, so unless something looks terribly fake, it's probably a real piece of agate.

I'm thinking maybe its another type of stone but goes by this as a trade name...

I found a site that refers to tree agate as "microcrystalline quartz", which pretty much covers the chalcedony family of stones (meaning agates, carnelian, aventurine, and jaspers). That doesn't narrow it down much!
