textures are simple. you choose one, paste it over the top of your image - stretching it so it covers the whole thing - and then in the layer style drop down box (it's automatically set to normal, you can find it above your list of layers) scroll through the different styles. different styles make the texture look different, so you can see the image below but in a different light. Overlay is normally the best.
y'can reduce the opacity of the texture, too, to make it less visible.
