I was honestly bored and just felt like drawing a thingy yet I ended up cooking a whole ass movie poster holy shit

I don't think I mentioned this before but one of my favorite reoccurring themes that Mothra has is her ancient rivalries with monsters who are the complete opposite of her, both design and personality wise. Most notable of these monsters being Battra, Gigan, Desighodorah, Bagan and MonsterVerse King Ghidorah to an extent. I was thinking of making an artwork of Mothra with her rivals for some time, and I finally got to do so now. Wanted Mothra to be the main focus, so I colored and centered, while her rivals are all shown as silhouettes with glowing red eyes (I also found it really funny how one of the things that all of Mothra's rivals have in common were their red eyes lol). This was the second time I made a symetrical drawing, first one being my Battra anniversary one from December. Again I had to do it manually since I could not for the life of me find a symmetry tool anywhere in Medibang's settings, but it wasn't all that hard since Mothra has a symetrical design and I just copied one side and pasted on the other lol

Battra was the first monster which had an ancient rivalry with Mothra, and his rivalry with Mothra is the most known one out of Mothra's rivalries in general. Battra stands out the most since he's Mothra's dark counterpart, her complete opposite. What makes their rivalry stand out to me is that both Mothra and Battra are protectors of Earth, yet have different beliefs. Battra despises humans since they have harmed the Earth before and wants to destroy humanity because he think that if he won't then humanity itself will end up destroying the Earth. Mothra on the other hand knows that there are humans out there with good hearts who are willing to protect and care for the Earth. Mothra also despises humans who harm the Earth, but she doesn't believe that all humans are the same and she's way more forgiving then Battra. The two of them fought 12 thousand years ago, after Battra started killing humans in a fit of rage, with Mothra trying to stop him. Mothra ended up being victorious, and sealed away Battra, who then woke up again in the 90's to continue on his rampage. Eventually the two monsters realize that they still strive for the same goal and have the same common enemy (that being Godzilla) and put their differences aside in order to stop him. Mothra's rivalry with Battra is probably the best written one, given how different yet similar the two monsters are, and in the end they realize that fighting each other won't lead them anywhere and instead become allies

Desghidorah was the second monster to be portrayed as Mothra's ancient rival, as well as the first antagonist in the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy. The trilogy emphasizes on the rivalry between the Ghidorahs and the Divine Moths, not only with there being two Ghidorah villains in the trilogy, but also through Desghidorah's relationship with the Divine Moths. Desghidorah first attacked Earth millions of years ago, back when there used to be a lot of Divine Moths. He was defeated by them and then sealed away, but ended up re-awakening in the 90's after his tomb has been unsealed. Mothra and her unborn son, Leo, were the only Divine Moths left on Earth. Mothra tried her best to fight Desghidorah, but was old and weak and ended up dying soon after her fight with him. Mothra Leo however picked up from where his mother left off and fought Desghidorah after he transformed into his imago stage. Leo was young and strong and managed to defeat and kill Desghidorah, making sure that his ancestor's efforts weren't in vain. What makes Desghidorah stand out among Mothra's other rivals is the fact that he was an enemy to all of the Divine Moths, not just a single Mothra, his rivalry with them lasted generations, but has finally over thanks to Mothra Leo, who not only saved the Earth, but avenged his late mother.

Gigan was the third monster which had an ancient rivalry with Mothra, with their rivalry being my personal favorite. In previous installments Gigan and Mothra had never really interacted before, besides a few episodes in Godzilla Island in which they were enemies. But then in Final Wars Gigan was introduced as a cybernetic alien monster controlled by the Xiliens, who was sent to Earth 12 thousand years ago to wreak havoc, but was stopped by Mothra. The two of them fought each other, with Mothra being the winner. Gigan was left unconscious and was then mummified by Mothra, until the Xiliens came to Earth again to wreak havoc again. Gigan was awakened and while he was shortly defeated by Godzilla, he was soon back on his feet again. Mothra came to help Godzilla, but ended up encountering Gigan, with the two of them picking up their fight from where they left off. Gigan had a more egocentric personality, which led him to underestimating both Godzilla and Mothra, and Mothra ended up taking full advantage of that and defeated. I am personally really invested in the rivalry between Gigan and Mothra and their relationship as a whole (which was probably extremely obvious by now since they're my favorite ship and I can't shut up about them), and my favorite aspect about them is how well they contrast and parallel each other. Mothra is a kind, caring, modest monster, who looks almost completely harmless, whereas Gigan is an aggressive, cunning and egocentric monster, who is full of spikes and edges. I like how easily they managed to write Gigan as Mothra's rival even tho they never had any other canon interactions beforehand. Gigan ended up being known as Mothra's arch nemesis among fans, with many of them (myself included) wanting to see the two monsters fight each other again someday

Bagan was Mothra's rival who never came to be. For those who aren't aware, one of the movies that Bagan was proposed for was "Mothra vs Bagan" in which the two were ancient rivals and were going to end up fighting each other again. Bagan was supposed to be an ancient demonic beast who attacked China thousands of years ago, but was stopped by a clan of Divine Moths and sealed away in the Himalayas. He would then wake up again in the 90's due to global warming, and would resume his rampage, but would soon be stopped by Mothra. The two of them would fight, with Mothra almost getting killed by Bagan, but still end up defeating him, with the help of a newborn Mothra larva. The adult Mothra would then carry Bagan's unconscious body to the sea, and would seal him away in the water, with Mothra dying soon after. This movie never ended up being made, but some of its concepts were instead recycled for the first Rebirth of Mothra film (I think you noticed just how similar the descriptions between Bagan and Desghidorah are here). While this movie was never made, people still like to headcanon Bagan as one of Mothra's ancinet foes who she fought against thousands of years ago. Fortunately however, Bagan and Mothra's rivalry still ended up being a reality, thanks to Godziban. As you all know by now, Bagan had finally made his first on-screen debut in the Godiban DVD special, in which he fights against the twin Mothra larvae and the Battra larva, but ends up defeating the three of them, but is then confronted by the mother Mothra, which defeats him and seals him away. While Mothra vs Bagan was a movie that never came to be, their rivalry still ended up becoming a reality, thanks to Godziban, which is kind of silly considering how Godziban is just a puppet show for kids.

Now I know that I also mentioned that MV Ghidorah could also count as one of Mothra's ancient rivals, yet I didn't include him in the picture, and I have an explanation for that. First off I felt like it wouldn't fit that well considering I used Heisei Mothra and all of the other Kaiju are from Toho's films while the MonsterVerse is made by Legendary and Warner Bros, and second off, Ghidorah is supposed to be Godzilla's rival in the MonsterVerse, and Mothra is also his enemy since she is Godzilla's ally. They don't exactly have a rivalry, but are just normal enemies since Ghidorah is rivals with Godzilla and Mothra is Godzilla's ally, which is why I didn't include MV Ghidorah (plus the image would get too clogged up and there already was a Ghidorah included here soooooo)

Overall really proud of this piece and I feel like I managed to show off it's message really well, definitely one of my favorite pieces so far
