Description
Sherborne Abbey started its life as a Saxon cathedral and it definitely shows. Architecturally, it is a rather simple building with a low and stocky square tower, like most extant Saxon churches. The original Saxon embellishments were sadly not preserved - as you can see, the church was remodelled into a then-fashionable Gothic style, which, while looking good, is fairly ubiquitous, while Saxon churches are incredibly rare and very few of them are preserved in their original condition.
