James was built in 1912 as a one off variant of the L&YR class 28, nicknamed the class 29. He was built with larger driving wheels and a front pony truck in an attempt to fix the class' nosediving problem, and was built with wooden brake blocks, which were prone to burn up. Unfortunately the experiment did not yield the results hoped for, despite this the L&YR and later the LMS would still keep him in service until 1925.
In 1925 the NWR and the LMS made an agreement to allow the NWR services to reach Barrow-In-Furness in return for allowing then LMS to operate on the Norramby branch. Part of this deal involved an exchange of rolling stock. The NWR sold off the former 1 and 2 of the Wellsworth and Suddery engines to the LMS and in return the NWR received five Fowler tenders, (which would all go on to be used by many NWR locos) and a mix traffic engine. And I'm sure you can guess who that engine was.
On his first day his wooden brakes caught fire and he crashed into a field whilst pulling a goods train. This practically wreaked his tender and cab and damaged his firebox. After Thomas rescued him he was rebuilt with a new cab and firebox and was given one of the new fowler tenders. He was also given a new coat of red paint inspired by NWR number 12 Eliza, who at the time was on loan. James antically worked on passenger trains before being assigned to goods and shunting, the later he hated and went on strike, which lead to him and the other big engines being shut up in the shed, after a new shunter named Percy was bought James was reassigned to mix traffic duties alongside Henry, Eliza and Edward.
In 1965 to coincide with the Skarloey railway's centenary James was given blue lining to match the SR's red livery, the lining stayed after the event and has remained ever since, according to James it makes him look more "Splendid".
James is now a utility engine like Donald and Douglas, he handles any and every train he is given, even if he doesn't like it.
