Description 1913-1924: In an attempt to find a solution to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Class 28's problem with nose diving at high speeds, George Hughes and Horwich Works designed and built an experimental mogul version (nicknamed the 29 class) intended to fix the problem. The extra set of wheels did help, but due to the amount of alterations and money that was needed to do this with the other 28's deemed the trial as a failure. Despite this, however, the L&YR decided to keep James as-is, but never frequently used him.

1923-1925: James' short time working with the LMS ended up being the few years where James would actually be used the most, with many locos being produced under the small engine policy proving to be ill-suited or inadequate for jobs that he could handle with little to no problem. In 1925 the LMS struck a deal with the NWR, the NWR would be allowed to run to Barrow, while LMS trains were allowed to go as far as Tidmouth and even join-occupy Norramby with the NWR. Somehow in this deal James managed to make his way onto the island having been officially purchased from the LMS that year, things would've gone smoothly, but a runaway and his wooden brake blocks would soon change all of that.

1925-1965: Now repainted red and fitted with proper brakes, James would return more vain than ever. While he may make it sound like he was the first and only standard gauge engine on the island to be painted red, as anyone would know, that isn't true because of a certain nameless red engine that made it onto the railway before him. However, despite his vanity, he really is ok, dependable, reliable, and seldom late, James is indisputably an invaluable asset to the railway.

1965-current: To coincide with the Skarloey Railway's 100th anniversary, James would be painted in a livery meant to be reminiscent of the SR's red livery, the reason why it stuck with him even decades later however, is something that's yet to be found out, probably just liked it more if i'm being honest.
