Description Stone by stone
Cracked, crushed, fallen
Beauty burned
Erased, but ne'er forgotten
I'll take your melodies
May your last breath
Fill the air with embers
I inhale
In their blood I will stand
Let the waning light of man
Cast my shadow on the fires of war
Till our kind burns away
Till our embers fade to grey
Cast my shadow on the fires of war

When Robert graduated from his nine months of Ninth Division training in Silent Valley, he shipped out with the hearty members of Squad 31. (On the left, holding the Captain's sword, hat, and coat) Third Brigadier Dolnerr Porter, an amiable, myopic armadillo who compensates for poor eyesight by carrying a lamppost into battle. (On the Captain's shoulders) Third Brigadier Neoma Nedra, who prefers her tea strong and her swords long, and will never betray her Captain. (Holding Neoma) First Brigadier Arlys, the Seacat of Skylar Quay, former Captain of the mighty ship Water Wyvern. (Holding a bowl of soup) Second Brigadier Molan the medic, a mongoose who irrationally holds himself responsible for the physical and psychological welfare of everyone in the world. He has no last name. (Leaning on Runcaeden, passed out from exhaustion) Third Brigadier Robert Peterson Carver, who will one day reshape the entire world, but for now, needs to learn to take rest when it is offered him. These were his comrades, his brothers in arms. They shared a bond of blood and sweat that time cannot erode. They kept each other alive and sane in those days of death and madness. Don't worry. It's friendly. Djuradha has birds, too. In fact, the many small civil wars caused by birds picking either side of the war is a problem all its own. But one that Robert doesn't get directly involved in.

I didn't actually have anything in mind when I drew the two looking at each other. More that Dolnerr was speaking, and Arlys cut his eyes over while listening. I suppose I could conjure up a story-relevant explanation, but there wasn't one originally.

Of course, of the whole squad, those two would be the quickest to draw some grim conclusions from the information being given them by Neoma. Who knows?

I love the little profile you’ve given each of these characters! Really makes them feel like a family of sorts

They'll be at the heart of an entire book, if I have anything to say about it. Robert has many memories of the Western War, not many of them pleasant, some of them painful. A few of them that he would gratefully forget if he could. But he remembers his Squad with fondness. Great and Perilous were they. They will march ever on in his memories, heedless of time. Heedless of any distance that may have grown between the paths they walk.
