Hi, I’m here from  .

I love the color scheme in this picture. The whites, silvers and blues combine to create a chilly, slightly ethereal atmosphere that’s amplified by the vast moon and misty ground. The shiny shading complements and adds to that feeling beautifully.

Your friend created a cool character design – simple, but with lots of nice touches – and you made it look fantastic. The diamond-shaped pupils are a nice touch, and I like the rainbow stripes on the lapels and the lower edge of the jacket.

I love it when characters’ poses and facial expressions seem to tell a story, and your portrayal of Crystal Sans certainly does. He seems weary and resigned, with a hint of boredom that’s belied by the intense focus in his eyes.

Overall, it gives the impression that he’s approaching his final opponent at the end of a long and harrowing story that’s forced him to become strong, and while he won’t take pleasure in his revenge, he’s quietly confident and ready to wipe a deserving evildoer from existence.

Since you submitted your picture to ProjectComment, I have a few pieces of constructive criticism that I hope you’ll find helpful.

1. Shading

There are several places where it looks like there should be shadows, but there aren’t. For example, where his scarf meets his jacket, in the folds of his scarf, under his lapels, and on the lower edges of his head. Their absence doesn’t make the picture look bad, but adding some would give it more shape and dramatic effect.

2. Pose

The walking pose is fairly good, but the way the feet overlap does contribute to the “catwalk/balance beam” look. It might look more natural if the feet were a little further to the sides instead of one being almost directly in front of the other.

3. Anatomy

There’s a bit of a gap in the line of his mouth. I know this is a common technique, so this is a matter of taste, but I think it makes it look like part of his mouth is fused shut or was left partly-drawn, which detracts from the effect of the picture. It makes that line seem more like a symbolic representation of a mouth than an actual part of a character’s body.

Speaking of his face, the vertical lines between his eyes look cool, but anatomically questionable. At first I thought they were some sort of character-specific marking, until I looked at the reference sheet and realized they weren’t there, and then I looked at another of your pictures and realized you put them on Cross Sans too.

I get the impression that they’re supposed to mark the spot where his eye sockets meet the bridge of his nose, but that effect is compromised by the fact that the lines of his eyelids extend past the vertical lines. It also gives the impression that his eyelids are concave, when it would be more realistic for them to be convex. (At least, inasmuch as realism even applies to magic skeletons, haha.)

All in all, while they look good in this picture and they’d work well as tattoos or birthmarks, those two lines don’t make much sense as anatomical features.

4. Clothing

At the point where the scarf leaves Sans’ neck and falls down by his side, it seems to jut up farther and more sharply than that kind of fabric would. Around his neck, it’s soft and floppy, but the way it angles up before falling down makes it look like that part of the fabric is stiff. Granted, that seems to be part of the original design, but I thought I’d mention it in case consistent fabric texture was something you’d need to keep an eye on in your own original designs.

OK, that’s enough nitpicking – back to the compliments.

The mist really adds to the ominous, mystical atmosphere of the picture, and it increases the impression of the lone, casually-dressed hero, calmly emerging from the fog to meet an opponent for whom he feels no need to wear armor. I’ll probably use this picture as a reference if I ever draw a scene with this kind of tone, scenario and character personality.

I hope my feedback helps! Keep up the awesome work.

Stephanie

Hello!
I love your comments so much! It makes me so happy
You took your time seeing the character's reference and my other work. That makes your comments even better and an honor for me <3
For your critics, I would like to give some answers if you dont mind.

1. Shading
These parts of "where his scarf meets his jacket, in the folds of his scarf, under his lapels, and on the lower edges of his head" actually have shadows on them and I just realized by now they disappeared because of the dark shading I did for his front body. You could see here Crystal Clear No Background [GIFT]  that I made some. Thank you so much for telling me this. I would make sure to be more careful when I stacked up different shades.
2. Pose
I agree with your advice here. I searched for such walk online and I did realize the mistake. Thank you for telling me this as well.
3. Anatomy
Here is the hard part for my art. My style is greatly influenced by Anime characters (because I like to draw them in past). I know for long that some parts did not match the characteristic of a skeleton, especially the skull and face. But deep down I have this desire that I wanted to draw differently from other Sans' artist. Everytime I searched for Sans' fanarts, about 60-70% of their style look similar in my opinion. I wanted to create things differently but maybe I should try to stick with his original design. But for me it is a difficult choice since it means I had to change my style and influence entirely. I know saying "this is my style" is a bad excuse, but I hope anyone could understand what I mean.
Thank you for putting your constructive critics and advices there and dont worry! I appreciate every words and comments about my way of drawing anatomy and I loved them!
4. Clothing
Thank you for mentioning about his clothes and thank you for your advice. I tried to keep things close to his reference so that's that XD

Overall, Im so glad you chose my art and gave a comment about it.
It is a thoughtful and wonderful comment I have ever received since I joined DeviantArt.
Thank you also for the group!
I hope I could meet other people like you to comment about my art <3
Also thank you for all of the compliments!
Your idea for this piece is wonderful as well I did not think that far but I like it!
I hope you like this piece <3

I'm sorry for the late reply; I was scrambling to create a training course on a deadline.

I’m glad to hear my comments made you so happy!

Regarding the problem where adding shading makes some of the shadows that overlap with it disappear, you might want to try putting your brush into “multiply” mode when you’re shading. That way, instead of all the shadows ending up the same shade, subsequent strokes will make existing strokes darker, so the original shadows stay visible.

You’re welcome for the advice regarding the pose. I’m glad you were able to find the solution.

I can see why you’d want to keep a stylistic choice that makes your art more unique-looking. I suspected the way you drew the eyelids was anime-inspired, and I certainly don’t expect you to change your whole drawing style. Just making a couple minor changes – namely, reversing the curve direction of the vertical eyelid lines, and not having the horizontal eyelid lines overlap with them – would make it look more realistic without drastically changing the art style, but whether you want to do that or not is up to you.

You’re welcome for all the advice and compliments. I’m glad you enjoyed them, even if some of them didn’t match your intentions for your art. I certainly do like this piece.
