Very realistic map,i love it   but i thought that Valles Marineris area would be highland grassland/steppe instead of cold desert,i would love to live near Mons Olympus
with clouds covering its peak,or near the shoreline of Hellas Sea,or near Esylium mountains
what Atmosphere composition has this terraformed Mars?
how Humans managed to reactivate Mars' Magnetic field?

My depiction is educated guess work really.  So you could be right, based on climate models I assumed that area would be dry, grassland isn't "wet" by any means.

you should darken the green on mars seeing as it is muck further away from earth, the plants chloifile would need to be much darker to gather more sunlight.

Things would just grow more slowly, like green houses in the winter on Earth. The year is twice as long, and the light is half as much so it all evens out.

This looks amazing - like all your planet pictures, really. Well done! I know what my next few desktop wallpapers will be.

Some random thoughts: I've been thinking that future terraformers would want to maximize the surface area available for a land-based biosphere. In other words, they would want to maximize a planet's land area that is not covered by deserts or ice sheets. For example, lowering the sea level increases the total land area (good) but also increases the desert area (bad). Presumably there must be some king of "golden mean" or optimal sea level that gives you the greatest possible non-desert land area.

Do you know what that level might be on Mars? Of course, with all the craters in the southern hemisphere, it may be possible to make a lot of lakes above sea level, in order to prevent desertification. Why go to all the trouble of terraforming a planet and then allow so much of it to become desert because of nature's mistakes in placing landmasses?

I don't speculate about that in these particular images. Just what the world would look like with the most Earth normal conditions at the surface.

I like it very much! Are you going to create more pics showing a terraformed Mars?

Probably not soon, too busy with real life to do that and I have several requests backed up already.

But would you like to help in the future?

The only help I need with the art is more free time. And maybe a super computer with a giant screen and shads of RAM.

It looks nice, I've been meaning to ask, what did you use to decide on sea level?

Ittiz In reply to Zsantz [2009-12-12 23:02:26 +0000 UTC]

I made the assumption that the water on Mars that used to be there got sequestered or if some escaped it was replaced during the terraforming process by some means. Evidence shows that Mars was about 1/3rd covered by water, which is what I depict in my images.
