Three hundred and fifty-eight years ago a deep space exoplanet evaluation team consisting of scientists and primary colonists happened across a Terra-like planet. The system was still young so there has not been time for development of advanced, let alone intelligent, species. It was deemed suitable for colonization.
A small outpost was established. However, the system's relatively youthful blue/white star flared with a massive CME directed toward the planet in the second year. Sensors orbiting the star alerted the outpost to the imminent danger. The ship's crew ordered immediate evacuation. The landing craft, filled with all that it could take and short on time, immediately departed leaving some of the colonists and a few engineers and scientists behind. The landing craft docked with the starcraft carrier and departed the system to report the incident.
Those remaining sheltered in a geological survey tunnel that had been converted for supply storage. They took livestock, seeds and pretty much anything that was not fixed in place. The CME scoured part of the planet face, sterilizing the zone they were in. The survivors emerged to find little of their technology had survived. Fields were replanted, and shelters were built. Several large towers were erected with an eternal flame to mark the location of the survivors and guide their homeworld back to them.
These are all just stories now and the history has been orally handed down with each generation making small embellishments. Still, some believe the sky-angels will come one day and the fires must be kept burning to show their faith.
