Description Lawls...I actually took my time with this and it still took much shorter than expected to finish :/
Anyway, this is based on the "Luxio Tribe" encounter in Far Amp Plains from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness (...but not Sky? You were late to the party)...hence the "Water Float".
I say based, because Far Amp plains isn't actually a dusty orange...nor is their actually a Luxray in this picture. The orange-brown was more a decision on my part, because it really works so much better with all the blues (and the green) in the picture. The blue-backgrounded-version had some synergy, but everything just kind of blended together. I'll probably chuck that in scraps so you can compare.
This is probably the longest I've spent on anything so far, but I still feel it's a bit dodgy. Some parts are more suggestive as opposed to definitive, but that's probably just the streakiness. (Hurr...I love GIMP filters.)
Above anything else the lighting is probably the most naff part, because in the sketch I drew some bracketed torches and based the lighting on those, but then I removed 'em cos they looked goofy in a setting like this. So now, although the sky suggests it's night-time, there's a lotta light still about *starts to argue it's from the Luxio*

Also...
...Geo Pebbles = Win.

Oh, by the way, if anyone can actually see my signature in this, well, you must be superhuman. It's there somewhere though..!

So...they did change it in Sky? I thought so. I heard it was to Manectric? But Manectric doesn't have X-Ray vision to see through the hiding place :/

I think the Manectric can hear them. I played Sky, but I completed the game a long time ago, and the memory's fuzzy.

You're welcome

Maybe you should wait a bit, till you have more time and after you improve, and redo the piece?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jacktoon In reply to loveanimelove [2010-10-12 18:41:47 +0000 UTC]

That's a good idea, actually. I've always considered maybe re-doing some of my older pictures to see what they'd look like now. It's just deciding how I class a picture as "old", because my style doesn't always progress at a steady pace. e.g. if I was to remake one of my very, very old pictures it would look surprisingly different, but, if I waited half a year or so and remade this particular picture, my style mightn't have developed far enough to make much of a difference (because, compared to very old work, my current style is already much further developed as it is.)
If you know what I mean

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

loveanimelove In reply to Jacktoon [2010-10-13 21:25:38 +0000 UTC]

I understand, but it's not about if your style progressed or not really, it's about how you improved. It's to SEE if you improved, so maybe you could put drawings your really proud of right now in a folder and whenever you feel like you've improved enough, redo them?

DunnyCT [2010-10-10 16:03:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh. Yeah. I can totally see your signature. You'd better tell me where it is so I can confirm what I'm definitely seeing. *cough*

Anyway, this is really very good. The whole thing works. And cyndaquil is great ^^ The brush-strokes/filter on the bg work really, really well, but I think that by using the same style on the actual figures, you end up with a slightly flattened effect - the pokemon are sort of lost in it. But that's a minor thing, and hell, that might just be how I see things. After that, the only things I'd suggest is strengthening some shadows right under the character's feet (they're a tad floaty) and WATCH YOUR PHYSICS! This bit's got nothing to do with art at all, but if you follow the path of machop's arm, the geopebble should end up at his feet, instead your's bounces of the air itself. If machop was to throw like that and release the rock, then the path it would travel would start off at the top of the arc. Get it? But artistically it's fine. It's actually a very good piece, well put together.

Next time, I'm going to spite you my saying there's nothing you can fix, so there.

Jacktoon In reply to DunnyCT [2010-10-12 18:36:16 +0000 UTC]

Huhuhuhuh, well, my siggy was rather hidden. I didn't realise quite how small it was until I submitted the picture :/ it's actually inside the ring on the Explorer Badge on Cynaquil's treasure bag. You can't see it at all unless you were to zoom in.

I think you're right about losing a bit of focus by using the same effect on the whole picture. I mean, originally I went through all kinds of different ideas in my head, such as blurring out the background and leaving the figures in focus, or, outlining the foreground but leaving the rest lineless, but in the end I just decided to add the brushy effect across the whole thing and not do anything differently between the different planes. I was even going to darken the shadows in the far background to push it back, but I didn't want to make it too dark to see. Although, as you noticed, the shadows probably aren't the best here anyway. I really did need to darken it a bit more, really.

And lawls, I didn't really take particular notice of the physics. All I knew was that Geo Pebbles should fly in arcs, and to show Machop in a recognisable throwing stance I decided to put him in an overarm bowl. I didn't really stop and think whether it would actually work that way or not realistically it ought to have been underarm or a lob I guess. But this is Pokémon, and nothing makes sense in Pokémon

Haha, well, I'm sure there'll always be stuff in my drawings that need fixing but I honestly couldn't find any in yours. But spite me as you see fit.

That's not very spiteful, is it?
How about:
I HATE U, AND YOUR LITTLE DOG, TOO! *cackle*

But it's still a very good piece, well thought out and good use of fore/middle/background. Just watch the shadows and brush styles, and you'll be all set - you know, I bet you learnt a lot from it. And, (I've said this before) that's all that matters at our stage in life, right?

OH MAI, HOW VEWWY SPITEFWUL!

Thanks though every time I make something new I try and be a little more careful with it. I'm slowly learning to think more about these things, like what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. I used to rush headlong into everything.
I didn't really learn anything from making it per se, rather, I used it to try out more stuff I'd already learned. I guess I always learn from my mistakes too, though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DunnyCT In reply to Jacktoon [2010-10-13 11:48:10 +0000 UTC]

Well, I bet that mistakes are there to be learned from. It's only if you continue to ignore them out of ignorance that's the big error. And you've definitely improved, right? Hey, did you check to see was there any deviations that you uploaded exactly a year from posting this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jacktoon In reply to DunnyCT [2010-10-13 12:05:46 +0000 UTC]

Oh sure, of course mistakes are to be learned from but they shouldn't be the only thing you learn from; but I don't think I've ever learnt much other than from my mistakes. Until I started art college, of course.

And, unless I have superhuman powers of time manipulation, I can't say what deviation I'd have uploaded one year from posting this. I know what deviation I made one year before this though. *shot*

Lawls. I wouldn't even go anywhere near calling anything I've made a "masterpiece", let alone any of that older stuff. :/ Oh sure, I've improved a lot because, hey, it's not like it was possible for me to get any worse. There's still a ways yet :<

DunnyCT In reply to Jacktoon [2010-10-13 15:25:30 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry, I'm a little out of touch on irrelevant slang. A ways yet as in there's still a lot of areas you can improve on, or a lot more time for you to screw up? Maybe both? Possibly neither? Oh - seeing as you have done what can only be called "over 9000" deviations, have any of them hit the point where you can't look at them without feeling embarrassed? That's always happening to me. Even as recently as the aerodactyl thing, but then that was just a gimmick to begin with.

Jacktoon In reply to DunnyCT [2010-10-13 15:34:44 +0000 UTC]

"A ways yet as in there's still a lot of areas you can improve on" <- that.

And yeah, I've said before how I look at my older stuff and think "did I really do that?" It's not so much embarrasment more it's just how different it seems. I mean, most of it was complete utter tat, so I really did start from nothing. Most of it would make you think "am I really still looking at the same person's work?" It feels so disconnected to everything else, especially the work after getting my tablet. It's almost like a part of me from a time gone by. I mean, back then I was really quite depressed and I made "art" just to amuse myself, but now, art is almost my life. There's definately a few points of transition in my work.

DunnyCT In reply to Jacktoon [2010-10-13 17:50:52 +0000 UTC]

I suppose it was a good while ago. I definitely (note: definitely!) think that I've come along in the last year more than any other year - thanks, dA! I know you've said you were incredulous about seeing old stuff - but I mean embarrassed. I blush, particularly when I see old life drawings. Still, I suppose my skills now are built on the ones I had then. I still think there's a similarity between your old and recent stuff; I think it's the use of lines and your choice of colour that identifies it. BUT! Just because it's how you draw doesn't mean you're restricted to it. I experemented with colour last year, and I learned loads from that.
And, considering you are doing an art course, I guess it really IS your life.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jacktoon In reply to DunnyCT [2010-10-16 17:52:02 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'd say I've come a long way since joining dA too (and if it wasn't for people like you I'd probably still be drawing no differently to how I'd started.) But again, I'm not really embarrased by my old stuff per se. I DO get embarrased though when people compliment it. Like, the old stuff. I remember when I was getting my portfolio set for my college interview, and my dad pointed out the old sketches on the shelf and was all "hey, take these too, they're really good" blah blah and I wasn't having any of it. "They're not good; they're nothing on their own, or even together". The "good" of them isn't the tangible picture, it's what I learnt from them. They're just like, waste, or by-products to some degree, y'know? But obviously quality is still a factor. I wouldn't like, call Pokénauts a waste or by-product, since some things are more application as opposed to progression.

It's safe to say our stuff has changed a lot though. Maybe even fairly simultaneously. But in honesty when I look back I don't feel like I've really got out of it what I've put in...yet. I mean, my will to improve made me go about it like an absolute maniac. 300+ deviations, and only in the last month or so have I really felt like maybe I'm getting a bit better.
I mean, seriously, I've done, what, four-six weeks of a college art course, and I've learnt more than, well, anytime before that combined. I've learnt that I've been using everything WRONG; paint, pencil, pastel; everthing I thought I knew, I've been doing it wrong. It makes me wonder why people bother with school really. Looking back, I learnt nothing from art at school...other than how NOT to do things, it seems :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DunnyCT In reply to Jacktoon [2010-10-16 19:02:23 +0000 UTC]

Lol. Sure haven't I been saying that the whole time? Of course you don't learn anything in school; school's really only there to get you a grade or art college. I don't learn ANYTHING art related in there. Just what to do in an exam. And then when I did the portfolio course, I learned loads: because it's focused on actual art and improving. And you're the same. The goal in art college is simply to become good at art, no ulterior motives.

And on a totally related note, I get what you mean about getting irritated when people compliment old stuff. Only, to me, that also applies to recent stuff in school, too. Anytime I do life drawings now, I get compliments from plenty of people and the teacher deems it "A" grade. Which would be nice, except I'm fully aware that an A grade in art life drawing is still a very low standard for where I want to be; I don't want to be a big fish in a small pond. And that's all I get in school - the competition is non-existent. I'm the only one in my class that actually tries outside of the lesson. Granted there are one or two people in my year who are different, but in my class, it's just me. It's no surprise I resent everybody.

And don't worry about finding out you've done stuff wrong, focus on the past tense - you know now, which means you can only improve from there.

And frankly, I'm honored to know I've helped ^^ The same applies to you and yours; if it wasn't for everyone's support I wouldn't be putting in half the effort. On behalf of the amount I've got better by; I thank thee!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jacktoon In reply to DunnyCT [2010-10-17 14:27:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's true, but don't you just think it's...lame? Like seriously, we go to school to learn, but what do they really teach you? Doing art at school I was never taught anything, more, we were left to work stuff out for ourself, which is totally unfair, since it really is a trail-and-error subject sometimes. Plus, grades are so subjective! My teachers told me I was in for a solid B and in reality last year's work ony just managed to scrape a C grade :/ I still got the B, but still. College grades us only with a "pass" or "fail", because sticking a number or value on a piece of art is just stupid. Plus, it's all about the progression and evidence of that anyway, not just the finished work.
I mean, while I was life drawing at college, my tutor was having a grand old chuckle at me, so much as to dub me "the weird one". Everytime she came back round she'd notice me doing something wrong, and they were really basic things. Basics I should have learnt at school, but instead had been left to do for years totally wrong. Starting college so far has just felt like a huge "resetting" for me, like I'm suddenly back at square one, and even further behind other people. I mean seriously, I was holding a pencil wrong, shading wrong, resting on the page wrong, mixing paint wrong, using oil pastel wrong, blending just about everything wrong. And like, at break I'd walk about and look at everyone else's work and then totally sadface :C I'm having to learn stuff the right way, back at the beginning, when really I should have been told this at school and not have this problem now.
But lol, I feel oppositely about my classes, the competition is fierce, not non-existant here. I know I'll be competing one day with all those people for university and job places. They're all dedicated artists. I mean like, we're all helping each other there and stuff, and hold a common goal, but we're still in competition.

And I know, that I can only improve from here, but I really am so far behind everyone else it's unbelieveable. Well, not everyone, but most of them are pretty damned good and have far more knowledge about art than I do. By the time I've righted the wrongs I was so used to, they'll already be doing far more advanced stuff while I just get out the basics :<

But of course, you're right there. You havn't just helped, it's almost been a motivation. I always take advice people give me into consideration and try and build on that. It's nice to know you do the same! ...Although I'm probably not as much help as I'd like to be @_@

dude your coloring and poses are so good! and that one luxio in the background creeps me the fuck out, this reminds me of the lion king by the way..you know when scar sings 'be prepared' and theres like an elephant graveyard and the hyenas are doing backup and like nazi'ing about.

man i sort of miss playing mystery dungeon..i think i played..well i don't know which one i played, it was for gba so it was the first one, like red rescue team or something. i was a squirtle and my partner was cyndaquil. i can imagine this happening.

Lawls, thanks that Cyndaquil is a bit flustered. I had wanted him to loose more of those there berries, but...I was too lazy to draw them
I was quite pleased with the poses too...not too sure about the weird Luxio tangle going on in the foreground though :/ and lol that "creepy" one is also ill-proportioned. It's built like a wall
Y'know what though? I was actually expecting someone to reference Lion King, lawls. And I have no idea why, because I...can't actually remember any of it >_< therefore I have no right to keep breathing. *sob*

But lawls, Mystery Dungeon are odd games...like, there are bits of it I really enjoyed and some bits I thought sucked. Although I think the "meh" reviews it got were a bit harsh. It's not like a purchase I'd ever regret, unlike others that I've made :/ But I've never played the GBA one (or the other one on DS)...I guess they're a bit...samey. But still, it's quite a refreshing change from the normal Pokémon games, regardless. It actually made moves like Smokescreen useful.

Yeah, I only bought Darkness. The "version differences" in Mystery Dungeon were never worth it, plus Sky was a useless addition. I tend not to buy more than one game per "set", as you know. But yeah, I'm waiting on Black & White too every day that passes makes me more likely to give up my no spolier policy and go crazy. but I know that'll make the wait a billion times less exciting. Jacktoon In reply to PlatypusDoomSquad [2010-10-17 17:14:52 +0000 UTC]

No, I quite like my teeth where they are, thank you

Well, alright, there wasn't really much to spoil in SSBB. Although its characters are the equivilant of the new fifth gen Pokémon. Once I'd spoilt all the Smash characters, actually unlocking them in the game was far less exciting. E.g. I already knew all the unlock criteria so I just went in there and did it, sapping a lot of the surprise.
If I spoilt all the fifth gen Pokémon it'd be the same; I'd know what they are, how to get them and what they do. I don't want to ruin those discoveries. When I think about, say, how I excited I was when I first discovered the Regis is RSE, I realise that mystery and suspense is something I want to keep. At least, as much as possible (it's damned hard to avoid the fanart dropping in my inbox :/)

But lol adding Lucario in SSBB was lame. I guess they gotta keep with the times though (although if that's the case, the Pokémon Trainer ought to have been Brendan or May, not Red.)

AND IT BETTER BE. I want a shiny electric zebra.

oh
SO MUCH FAIL ON MY PART
I thought you were like asking me if I thought Dive and Pokeradar should be in it? I'm not quite sure what I was doing that day that I answered in such a confusing fashion, my apologies good sir.
I don't think there's Dive in this game :/ Though I would love that so much. There doesn't really look like there's that much water on the map anyways..and especially since there is a surprisingly low number of water types in this generation (in my opinion).
DD: I have no idea about pokeradar, but I'm about to check one what bulbapedia thinks. I want a shiny struck out for spoilers cuz it looks freakin sweet.

Oh, well, Dive in gen 5 is a very real thing indeed. I've seen it with my very own eyes (although in a rather "SPOILERS; CAN'T UNSEE" moment, although, hell, it's Dive. I don't care abot ruining that.)
Lol it's nice to hear there aren't many Water types though. In every other game I used to sort my Boxes by type, and I always needed TWO BOXES for Water. :/

If the PokéRadar is indeed still missing, I just hope there's some new alternative gadget that cuts out the middleman and actually just belches out shinies.
