I love it, personally. There's never anything wrong with a fair amount of empty space, it helps to guide the eye. I find myself easily guided between Sawsbuck and Deerling. I love the overall look and feel. I really just want to pet Sawsbuck's legs there, they look incredibly fluffy... But I think I'd get trampled if I did that. xD

It's all in how you use the negative space. Stay mindful of it and it will allow the eye to flow throughout the piece (or so I've been told. xD)
I'm not willing to find out. Those hooves look rather intimidating...

Oh, I kind of forgot that empty space was merely negative space. I think the difference here is that, you can still create an impactful negative space even when the background is fairly busy (by how the background elements give way to the foreground). I just found it hard it fill that space with something without it detracting from the picture. Usually I think I try and use perspective to catch and direct the eye, but there isn't a strong vanishing point in this one. :<
