Mostly a replacement for... the Abasor class, which I felt was kinda ugly and needed a rework. (Though I'm always reworking these concepts) Ends up making it 2.5 times bigger with more/less weapons. www.deviantart.com/jadegreen17… . Also an Excuse to draw a cross section in reworked Gauss capital ship, even if it isn't the best. The Abasor was always meant to be a cruiser-grade vessel that could go toe-to-toe with larger vessels.

The Vigilance is a cruiser-class vessel designed during the Gaussian Millenium Modernization program, designed with multiple roles in mind. Being a cruiser class it could operate independently of a fleet, either with an escort of lighter cruisers and frigates or simply using its internally carried compliment of fighters and gunships for support. With a toolbox of powerful and versatile weapons, interdiction generators and powerful sensors designed to detect cloaked or stealthed vessels; these ships would often be deployed to patrol the outer reaches of the galaxy from Pirates, Tagroolian zealots or Courdeel; and reasonably expected to come out on top in any engagement.

In the event of larger theatre warfare these ships would be integrated by the dozens into a larger fleet and used as pickets to protect larger battleships or artillery fleets. Here these ships could be used to screen larger dreadnoughts against cloaked stealth ships, or use their interdiction to halt FTL maneuver warfare. Their large reactor gave them excellent endurance in sustained battles, able to continuously put out fire and raise shield plates while other ships relied more on momentum capacitors or sources of stored power would quickly become drained in prolonged battles.

Having a single large reactor meant the rear section of the ship was somewhat vulnerable to damage, while a smaller reactor, or multiple deeper within the hull would lend to greater survivability of the craft; the immense advantage in overall power generation generally outweighed the downsides of greater vulnerability and cost. Regardless knowledgeable and sufficently well armed enemies could exploit this weakness to mission kill the ship.
