Description The small and furry animals called Cumaeites that dwell on Cumae's habitable surface thrive off of the plethora of vegitation and the warmth of given off by the heat and light of a close supernova 4 lightyears away. The excessive leangth of the explosion has enabled life to blossom on the surface, however the Cumaeites' existance is destined to by short lived. Poor things

------------------------------

Few hours. The story was going along great but the impatience struck and i left you with a sad ending. Shucks. Im proud of the planet, and i didnt want to get too complex. An attempt to add a moon and an asteroid belt left the piece unfocused. Embrace the minimalism.

Oh yeah, i made this while talking to a friend and took a couple of screenshots along the way, if you want em, just ask. I had fun

PS: Yes, im aware of the absurdity of the name and story. There is another story behind it, which includes using the name incandescence, but then i realized that such names are meaningless although they sound cool. Woot

It almost looks like a planet underwater with the themes of water and space kinda mixing with one another. Or perhaps that its not a sun thats illuminating it but rather some nebulae or cosmic event which could mabey be a related piece later on down the line or something. Very nice work!~

Amazing details!
I've also often tried to draw different planets with Photoshop, but never succeed with such a ... high level of realism.
The picture also gives the suggestion of a living, coloured, warm universe ... not just cold and dead...

This is very refreshing from the usual load of space-pieces you see around dA. Those are very beautiful, but every inch of the digital canvas is filled with planets, stars and everything... space-y.

But this is so mis-leadingly simple, you find yourself being drawn into the center. Where the planet and focus is.

Brilliant? Sure is.

I got a problem with that deviation and all the other space scene deviations of this kind. It looks eye candy and all that, but what's up with the style I mean come on everytime I see one of these deviations it looks like you just followed the photoshop tutorial that tells you to take a rock texture, spherize it, shade it, and add a glow, and in the end all the planet depictions done using photoshop have the same style and look as unrealistic.

I mean yours doesn't look bad nor is it the worst case of unrealism I've ever seen, but still, when I see how unrealistically shaded it is, how the atmosphere glow looks totally unrealistic, how many stars there are that you shouldn't be able to see in the background, I can't go past the fact that's it's just yet-another-photoshop-planet and I can't see for what it's intended to be.

To me it's just like Terragen, when you look at a Terragen render you can't help but think "hey that's a Terragen render!", and that pretty much ruins it because when something done by many different people with different kinds of skills results in always the same kind of stuff, it's pretty fucked up.

Like I said your thing looks good to me, it's just that it's the same old unrealistic photoshop planet thing. Just look at other deviations in the category you posted in, the majority of deviations depicting planets look like they've been done using the same old tutorial as you might have learnt from.

In all honesty, i understand where you are coming from. However, i really disagree with your concept of "style" and think you're very confused. First a foremost, this is not supposed to be realistic. Why would you want to make realistic spaceart? Have you ever looked at a real picture of the moon, jupiter, or pluto? They suck. For me, the beauty (or "eyecandy" as you called it) in spaceart is simply a depiction of how boundless i believe the universe is. Your argument behind all spaceartists having the exact same style makes no sense; yes, we all have the same basics of making planets and, perhaps stars, a nebula, and whatever else if we want it, but this parallels saying that painting a landscape 'just' requires making a horizon, then painting grass, and then a sky. It IS the same with terragen. Read [link]

Here, i don't believe im getting my point across, and im going to be blunt. Spaceartists simply do have radically different styles. Being good at spaceart takes talent, but its not like `alyn and `hameed were making the exact same looking pieces when they were at the same place in skill, nor any other two artists that are beyond copying-tutorial stage. The problem here is that you see nothing beyond the tutorials. Quite frankly, this is because your eyes arnt fine-tuned. When i show my friends [link] vs [link] , they very wrongly think that mine is better because more stuff is going on. They dont recognize details. When i first began spaceart, i thought all of everybody elses work was god, and thus the same. This is because i sucked. It all seemed so amazingly out of reach. However, as i got better, i started to see flaws and differences in other's work. Later i could even see flaws in `alyn 's work. These flaws having nothing to do with realism though. This can be seen in your only space-attempt, and correlates with why you just dumped everybody who does spaceart into one giant assumption. Lets talk about "ignorance."

The bottom line is that i enjoy spaceart because it is eyecandy. Yes. Other's work made my jaw drop and drool, and i decided i wanted to be able to do it. This is probably the case with many spaceartists. At first, of course its just imitation. If DA didnt exist 95% of spaceartists on this site would not be spaceartists. Its at later levels that creativity comes in. You just dont see it. I get to create worlds. It makes me feel free. I enjoy the sub-adrenaline rush i get when i see a good piece starting to come together. I enjoy others' jaw drop when they see my work, if their jaw drops. Screw "oh my god this cant be called art because the concept is old" and "oh my god this sux cuz its not completely real." Unrealistic lighting? So what? You said you liked it, lets not get competitive and go into pointless technicalities. I didnt ask for the DD

A real picture of pluto? of course real pictures of Pluto suck, they're like 5x5, black and white and interpolated to death. As for others (you could have mentionned Earth in your examples) I don't think they suck, personally..

My only space attempt? Oh don't pay attention to that, I don't consider that a real atwork, it's just that I had a friend on MSN who had something like this as her display picture but it looked pathetically bad, so I did it better for her and then I shared it here, no big deal, actually I'm gonna remove it, mostly that I used copyrighted material that I shouldn't use.

Anyways, I understand what you're saying, I've never really cared about that kind of art and thus it's normal that I think that it looks all the same, just like someone who'd never like to rock and comment that metal sounds all the same and that it sucks because they all use nothing but guitars and drums, but well I think you got my point anyways, the way I see it you guys use always the same techniques and only try to make it as "eye candy" as you can, I mean really, it's like you guys all try to make the most eye-candy picture in the world.

I still think that you guys could try to think out of the box and stop doing stuff that always has the same style, but after all if you guys drool over this style why would you wanna change?

jagged-r0cks In reply to HornyLilDeviant [2006-11-19 15:56:21 +0000 UTC]

And what if i said i don't consider my pieces 'real artwork'? Ive never called myself an artist buddy. This is a hobby, and i don't take it that seriously. If we are both not serious about art, as i presumed from your gallery, I am not positive as to why you are making such harsh and pointless criticisms, which, even if true, will never be 'fixed' because that would be the destruction of an entire genre. Thus your 'critique' is just registering as a giant whiny complaint.

As for realistic pictures, you actually like them? You want people to submit things that look like [link] and [link] opposed to [link] ? As far as i thought art went, stretching reality is awesome. Screw realism. And what is your definition of eye candy? If we are on the edge of stuff thats realistic, while the rest is simply imaginary of what we believe space does/should look like, what else would we try to make? We are going to make things that look good. Things that catch peoples eyes. Something so cool and absolutely breathtaking which causes the viewer to yearn for more than just to look at it. To wonder about it.

Thinking outside the box? I know that this is a rather cliche piece, but new steps are made in spaceart very often. *Exntrik used new 3d modeling in [link] , and even did include a photo of the moon. `alyn used 40 renders to create one image [link] . Other groundbreaking artists include =Nameless-Designer , :devAndr-Sar, =Nameless-Designer , and ~dilekt . Dilekt, especially, truly has a style of his own. But in the core, i do believe its execution over ideas in this genre. The core is digital painting, such as in [link] . It takes skill. Dont attempt to whine about us not having enough creativity when you have shown nothing but a negative attitude to us so far.

Frankly, i dont like that. But, your whole deal with realism is more limited than the style you believe most spaceartists copy from one another. Shit, if we made everything realistic, then absolutely everybody would be submitting things like that, and nobody would favorite them, but you. I don't care for your favorites that much.

"You want people to submit things that look like [link] and [link] opposed to [link] ?"

Dude, the examples you showed are not even remotely art, and it's like the worst pictures of the moon and eearth you could find out here. I don't even want necessarily to have something realistic, but at least some different style, like this [link] See, it looks different, and it's been done differently. This being said, this picture is a good example because the planets are not the protagonists of this picture but rather the scenery, and I like that better.

And dude, you're pissed off, I can tell. I didn't even mean to offend you, just tell you guys what was my opinion about this whole genre. I didn't show a negative attitude, that's called critique, and I felt free to critique since it's said "Advance Critique Encouraged". Advance Critique Encouraged doesn't mean compliment me harder, that means feel free to critique. That's what the fuck I did, you can't tell me that at any point I insulted you guys or anything. I feel you tho, that would piss me off if someone has criticized my shit the way I did.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jagged-r0cks In reply to HornyLilDeviant [2006-11-19 23:21:40 +0000 UTC]

You just "criticized" the entire genre, stating that I, along with most other spaceartists, are unoriginal, style-less, and repetitive. That isn't Advanced Critique. You are telling me/everybody to improve by starting over, or just deleting this piece. Don't tell us all why you hate the genre in my deviation. You accused me of making eye-candy, i say i am making eye-candy. End of story. You're not here to tell me to change my outlook on art, or my entire style to something like [link] .

Hell, think about what the hell you just did. You said that you don't like the images i am submitting, that the entire style of everybody in my genre shouldnt exist, and that we should instead be making things like [link] . La de da.Do you understand [link] is a completely different way of making art and doesnt correlate to this at all? It parallels telling a 3d artists to quit everything he has done and start drawing. If you simply dont like what im doing on such a grand scale, don't call your hate of it critique, because it isnt.

haha, you're just exagerating, I'm not suggesting you guys to stop everything you're doing and to throw all away, nor am I saying that I don't like what you do, like I said I think your deviation looks nice (read my first post in case you forgot), what I meant to say is that you guys don't seem to want to get away from each others style, and I find it disturbing, I don't hate it, I just find it weird to see so many people doing stuff that all looks the same to me, but now I realize it all looks the same to me because I don't know much about this genre, no big deal, no need to act as offended as you do.
