Description I got a DD for this!

--------

Howick, Northumberland

I was hoping for a glorious sunrise with all this volcanic dust in the air!

It wasn't exactly glorious but it was still a warm one, not many clouds in the sky either so I settled for a really long exposure, 3 minutes, 20 seconds to be exact, smooth seas!

Cheers Malcolm, just getting control of my message centre now glad you like the shot, it wasn't the shot I was intending on taking to be honest but the sunrise was fairly cloudless, that's usually when I use this 10 stop filter

What sort of filter would you use for a scene like this?

It's something i'd like a go at, but not massively sure where to start!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jamesholephoto In reply to SkankinMike [2010-11-06 08:23:17 +0000 UTC]

Hi Mike, its was a B+W 110 Neutral Density Filter which screws into my lens, you can see it here : [link] it cuts out a lot of light so you can have longer exposures! Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions!

SkankinMike In reply to jamesholephoto [2010-11-06 10:38:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Looking into getting an ND grad filter...

If you could only have one (one that sits somewhere in the middle), what would you recommend?

Thanks, Mike...

jamesholephoto In reply to SkankinMike [2010-11-06 11:34:19 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, tough question ... I would probably say a 0.9 Soft Edge, that would cover most lighting conditions I would imagine, the more you push it down the darker it will make the sky, i would recommend getting something like this if you have the budget : [link] , they also do a hard edge kit too, try and avoid the really cheap filters, they leave a colour cast, especially when you use more than one!

SkankinMike In reply to jamesholephoto [2010-11-06 13:26:19 +0000 UTC]

Superb! that's more than in my budget!!! I didn't actually know they were as cheap as that!!!

I live in the Lake District and i'm cursing myself for not getting out and about as much as I should!!! But we never do when it's on our doorstep!

Thanks so much for your help! I feel A push into new techniques coming on
