Great work! I have been considering doing civilian-turned-military vehicles like this, and this is nearly identical to what I had in mind. No offense to your friend - his is good, but yours is better. This has character, especially the back 3/4 view with its grippy-looking tires. Keeping the headlights in fenders is also a plus. For being a mash-up, this is close to final concept. The M2 on your friend's version is too small, and his tires don't give me confidence to go off road.
If you're wondering if I know what I'm talking about, then just look at my VAMP and other GI Joe vehicles. If you need more inspiration, check out this guy, Yasid Oozeear www.artstation.com/yasid . You've probably already seen his work I'm sure, but I especially like his Lancia Stratos for this type of stuff.

This was done back in the late 60's early 70's. I know. We had a test one in Alaska. Just glided over the tundra at 80mph or so.

We did not have a 50 cal on it. An M60 worked really good and detachable if needed. Never took off in the end as the Jeep was still in use. I loved the little Baja so much I built one after I got out in 75.

"We can't drive this in the post-apocalyptic battle race!"
"But boss, it's highly fuel efficient! All the guys with Hummers and SUV's will be eating our dust in the last leg of the race."
