Description
Another illustration for Call of Cthulhu. This one shows Azathoth himself, the greatest and most terrible of all the gods of H.P. Lovecraft's stories, so I wanted to do something really scary with lots of tentacles and stuff. Hope it worked somehow to do Azathoth at least a little justice. A step by step tutorial of this piece will appear in Martin McKennaβs digital horror painting workshop which will be out late summer 2006.Medium: Digital/Painter

how can people say Cthulhu is the supreme god of Lovecraftian horror when Azathoth exists?

Actually, I think Nyarlathotep is the supreme god of horror, due to the fact that he manipulates Azathoth like putty. He pretends to be Azathoth's servant, but, realistically, Azathoth is the servant.
But this picture is amazing, and definitely portrays the Blind Idiot God's chaos almost too well.

In some stories Nyarlathotep is actually Azathoth's will made manifest. When he created the universe he created the perfect 'son', thus robbing him of his own intellect creating the concept of the 'blind idiot god'. This is why I love the mythos, it's so rich with text and ideas.
But I do agree, Nyarlathotep is truly the supreme god of horror.

Of course. Cthulhu's just many times more intelligent. Not hard to be more intelligent than utterly mindless. Being mindless doesn't make Azathoth any less awesome, though.
All of the Great Old Ones are awesome, though. Nyarlathotep just happens to be my favorite of the bunch, with Azathoth being not far behind. After all, Azathoth spawned Nyarlathotep.

That is AMAZING - easily one of the best pieces I've seen on Azathoth, nice sense of chaos and finality. I think my favorite detail are the tentacles with open maws on their undersides. Ghoulish. Great work!
