Description When it comes to the creation-evolution debate, many people on this site seem to be divided into two extremes, secular evolutionists and Christian creationists. Beyond dA, there are many people seeking a middle ground between the two positions. How many people actually believe that when Charles Darwin formulated his theory of evolution, he rubbed his hands together and said "I'm gonna disprove Christiainity"? The truth is, Darwin formulated much of his ideas before he abandoned Christianity. The man who first introduced Darwin's theory in the US, botanist Asa Gray, was a Christian who obviously saw no contradiction between Darwin's ideas and his own faith.
Don't let the creationist rhetoric like RejectedDreams' "I Never Said, 'Let there be evolution: God" stamp fool you. There is nothing in evolution that threatens Christianity. Just read the book "The Language of God." The author, Francis Collins, shows us that evolution and Christian belief go hand in hand.

Now I'm gonna wait for RejectedDreams to come along and scold me for not being Christian enough.

When creationists start to rant, the first question that comes to mind is "Do you people fucking know that evolution does NOT disprove your god?"

I think it's pretty obvious not all people who believe in evolution are atheists. I mean Christians and Catholics believe in it.

I for one, am a Young Earth Creationist. I think evolution contradicts with the bible and does threaten Christianity although I do accept other people do not hold this belief. But I get the feeling I might be attacked.
I've been called stupid for not accepting evolution although I do love biology and am actually planning to go to college.

Also, I do believe Darwin went out with that intention.

And see this funny comic!: www.answersingenesis.org/after…

Yes, I agree. Even if people don't agree it should always be with respect. Some people don't believe in that, a kind of "earn my respect" thing.

I am an athiest and beleive in evolution and a lack of a deity but i would believe in god if the nesecary evidence was provided a single experience and"just have faith" is not enough

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KantiaCartography In reply to PixelMastser [2014-05-14 23:47:24 +0000 UTC]

The harsh reality is that the very idea of God can have no definable evidence apart from the evidence deemed "necessary" for each individual person to come to "faith". There will never be that one "Aha" moment for every person on Earth to experience all at once. When people say to "just have faith" what they really mean is "there is no way for me to prove the existence of God to you. If I could then I would be God and obviously I am not. Only God can prove His existence to you and for what reason would he tell me how he's gonna do it?" Just felt like putting it out their. The idea of faith can have broad implications.

You can't really blame them you know. Most people, in my experience, who believe in evolution hold religion to the regard of fairy tales, therefore making their belief in essence an assult to their (christian/creationist religion) beliefs. People are much less likely to accept something when they feel under attack.

Actually, the extreme division is a particularity of USA. In a lot of European countries, there are no debate anymore about evolution (seen as an evidence and a scientifical fact), and both christians and atheists are "evolutionists". Even the Pope admitted evolution is "more than a theory".

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 0

Greatkingrat88 [2012-12-26 09:57:58 +0000 UTC]

The "secular evolutionists" aren't really an extreme at all. A majority of people, secular and religious, have accepted evolution here in the west because it's the established scientific theory with regards to the development of life. The only reason we have any extremes at all is because the creationists like to make a fuss, and make it seem like it's two equally valid ideas- when it's just them refusing to face reality.

If only my family could see this reasoning (my mother and brother have started to give in to some of my explanations though, which is good). God have mercy upon the ignorant, not realizing that science is not in opposition to God, but provides an explanation for most of His works.

Although believing in evolution and god kind of ruins the whole 'natural selection' bit of it.

I'm just pointing it out in case you didn't notice, but it looks like there's a space that's not supposed to be there in "atheism." I'm guessing it's a typo, or some sort of rendering error, but it distracts from the message of your stamp a little. Sorry, not trying to be picky, just helpful. I think I know how you feel. I think that some people veiw Christians and Creationists as the exact same thing and that Christians and Scientists are completely different. well... I'm a Christian, and I actually like science and accept the Theory of Evolution because it makes sense. It explains why animals in different parts of the world look behave differently. I don't see how "organisms change in order to adapt to their environment" could ever translate to "God doesn't exist "... I think I'm done with my monologue for now...

I personally believe that god made the evolution happen, essentially which sounds very elementary and simple minded don't you agree? (when I put it that way anyways)

Erinokaz [2010-12-10 18:25:00 +0000 UTC]

I agree totally with evolution. There's so much proof of it that it's hard not to believe it. You just have to look at a monkey and you'll notice that they look and act remarkably like people. Even in the last few hundred years people have gotten taller, and I don't have wisdom teeth, they just aren't there, weren't ever there and won't ever be there, 1 in 30 people don't have them and over sometime we'll all evolve and no one will have them because we don't need them.

I hate it when Creationists call Evolutionists Atheists! It's one of my huge pet peeves. I don't even understand why there is a debate about it. It is possible to believe in God and evolution. After all, evolution doesn't go against the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. I believe in evolution, but I'm also a Christain.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Kollateralschaden [2010-10-05 08:48:59 +0000 UTC]

I think this evolution vs creationism is a mostly American phenomenom. I live in Germany and I have never ever met a person in real life that denied evolution (and I did some youth work (caring about children and such things) in the protestant church for serveral years).
I'm not saying there are no creationists in Germany, but if there are any, they are in some of the most rural backwater villages, I guess.
But then again, being religous or atheist is generally not a big deal here (except maybe in Bavaria).
I've been openly atheist for years, especially in religion class; and still I had always good grades in it, because it's, well, very secular (how it ought to be) and I've always been very active in participating and presenting my opinions on the subject.

Seek dialectic and for instance where that is not possible I seek peace. I'm an apatheist so I don't care to discuss gods existence, but evolution is always an interesting subject.

Thank you for saying this! Very true and it's so sad to see how people simplifies both evolution and christianity to the point of them being impossible to combine.
Darwin never fully abandonded christianity though, he was rather drifting against agnosticism. Some say he became a devoted christian again in his last years. It doesn't sound impossible to me.
The details about Darwins faith is not realy important though, what is important is that his life and work proves that christianity, agnosticism or atheism can be combined with evolution.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kkdd In reply to WerewolfThorn [2011-11-28 00:28:38 +0000 UTC]

He never again flirted with the idea of god, he was pressured into appearing religious for his family and had to edit some of the text in his books so not as to debunk religion completely (his 1st edition book on origin of species was his most original, afterwards he had to pander to Christian society).

You're free to believe in a diety, sure, but if you're content with the proof of evolution, it's a bit digressive to believe in god(s) without a shred of evidence. And is it not chance that you are a Christian? If you were born in another part of the world, you would be another religion and hold that as the absolute truth, again without evidence. Just a thought.
