In 1908, New South Wales and Victoria settled that the capital would be Melbourne.
On the First of January 1911 the northern bulk of South Australia was transferred to the Federal Government as the Northern Territory. In the year 1926, the Northern Territory was split into the Province of Northern Australia and the Province of Central Australia; Unlike in our timeline these two provinces did not dissolve in 1931.
In the year 1933, the Western Australian government had attempted to secede from Australia, under the name of Westralia. The Federal Government in Melbourne decided to punish them by splitting the state into three; the goldfield Province of Aurelia, the mostly Aboringinal Province of Pilbara and the remainder of Western Australia was renamed the State of Nova Hollandia, after the Dutch that had claimed the land back in the sixteenth century.
In 1966 the Province of New England was created out of the New South Wales regions of New England, the North Coast and the Northern Rivers after a referendum that sparked the issue that these areas are closer the Queensland than New South Wales, and that they didn't want to belong to an urban state.
In 2010 the people in Northern Queensland held a referendum to leave Queensland. This was to be safe from the anti - sugar cane movement in Southern Queensland. The secessionist movement won the majority and the area was split into two; The Province of Capricornia, which is known for its beer exports and the significantly Torres Strait Islander Province of Torresia. Because the desert would have been a burden to these two new states, the Queensland Panhandle was transferred to Central and North Australia.
In 2020, the New South Wales regions of Riverina and Murray seceded into the Province of Riverina over representation issues. The Australian government also decided to create the Province of Orana, out of the regions of Orana and the Far West.
NOTE: A Province is sort of like a half-state, I wanted to give autonomy to the original six.
