This male downy woodpecker was having a great day pecking away looking for anything he could find. Despite the cold temperatures he seemed to just be fooling around. He had been eating at my suet feeder earlier. He knew I was there the whole time and just let me get closer and closer.

I had never realized before but these guys roll their eyes into the back of their head when they are pecking. Makes sense that it is a mechanism to prevent debris from getting in their eyes.
