Description A drawing of my character, Bodie Troll, starting with a digital sketch, followed by tight pencils, and completed with inks. Normally, a digital sketch doesn't figure into my drawing process. But this drawing of Bodie is being used for a bigger project that required it--pick up issue #4 of Bodie Troll in October to see what that project is!

Thanks for sharing! Love getting a peek at the process, I learn so much more that way. Totally digging Bodie Troll, once you go dirty floor roots you can't go back!

Funny, my little brother's getting into painting and drawing his own cartoons, and this exact thing is a recurring lesson. The idea of begining rough and gestural, and only tightening up your lines and details when you've got a solid sense of your design. So nice to see that I'm not as off base as I think. Thanks for sharing your process Jay!Β

Digital sketching now? - Got an interesting feel to it doesn't it?

Don't get used to it--unless a Cintique falls into my lap! My little Wacom is fine for coloring, but for drawing to the extent that I do, gimme paper!

P.S. I owe you an e-mail. I'll be in touch soon, Chadly!

Interesting, it reminds me of looking at animation sketches and the kind of stuff you might see used in major studios.

It would be kind of cool to see the drawings that lead up to what would eventually become Bodie Troll, to sort of learn the evolution of the character.

This is as close to a tutorial on how to draw Bodie as it comes. I don't use proper shapes for his construction--its almost entirely gestural sketching that leads to the final product. If folks wanted to break down his anatomy into concise shapes, it could be done to a degree (nothing on him is a proper circle, rod or box), but just know that when I draw Bodie, it's purely repetitive instinct--not art school design principles.

Lies!
Clearly anyone can go to art school and learn to draw Bodie
Kidding

I am actually glad to see much of your work comes from gesture rather than the same repeated old circles and lines techniques that get pushed onto every student.
I've always preferred gestural or instinctual work.

One of my biggest beefs with Mickey Mouse was that you could so clearly see the shapes he was comprised of. Given that animation was in its infancy when he was created in the 1920's, it was acceptable that his design started out so basic. But it's been almost ninety years, and he's still just a walking pile of geometry. I prefer characters that have more weird, organic shapes. They might not be easily replicated for commercial purposes, but they're far more original.

Actually, there is an old animation from about the same time, done better and more organic, I can't remember what it was called but it was scrapped because it took longer and cost too much at the time so they gave up and went with more simplistic, commonly circular characters.

I will say that is why I like certain animated movies or series, the more organic the animation looks, the more I tend to like it.

I have to say it would be great to see any of your work made into an animated series or feature.

I just re-read what you wrote, and I think I see what you're saying--you meant to see the preliminary Bodie designs, and how they've changed in the last two years. Well my friend, without giving too much away, I'll tell you that the first appearance of what would become Bodie will be included as a special feature, and it's gonna be special indeed!
