Description Some of you may not know that there was a whole other design for the monster we've come to know as Predator. The design didn't work for the creators of the film, so they hired special effects artist Stan Winston to create the classic creature we know today. I was commissioned to draw the classic version battling the original, unused monster. As a horror fan, and particularly as a fan of The predator movies, this was a blast to create. I drew the characters in pen and ink, colored them in Photoshop, and created the background digitally, with a variety of textures and digital brushes to give the piece an overall jungle feel.

I had almost completely forgotten about the original design. Β Great work with the familiar Predator design, and the whole piece has the feel of a Japanese woodcut, with the Predator as a halberd carrying soldier running an opponent through.Β

This is great now you need to make Alien vs. the original Concept Alien.

Forgot to mention....
the original insect-lizard predator design was used in a scene in Robert Rodrigez's "Predators"

I really thought that I was the only one in the universe who picked up on that.
Whenever I pointed it out to my buddies, they never believed me.
Always had to resort to pulling out the old Predator DVD with the featurette detailing the whole thing.

I love it!Β  I sketched an image of that original predator when I came across that behind the scenes nugget, never did anything with it, but I am loving your battle here.Β

Why are you here Jay?
You should be designing for film and television

Yeah but they aren't as good as you
I always loved the old moves, the original Turtles film, Predator, Nightmare on Elm Street
Back when I was a kid I considered becoming an organic effects designer and film cosmetics designer but now everything is CG and terrible

Yeah, there was a period in the late 90's when I dreamed of designing creatures for Industrial Light and Magic.

It is ridiculous, the current movies are so sub-standard with the use of CG
Kind of why I like Guardians of Galaxy, it uses Organic Effects and CG but use them both right

I've seen pics of the real thing and yikes, it looked dire. Looked like it should be fighting Kamen Rider, not Arnold.

Then again, it might have made sense when it was revealed that the creature was actually just a giant power suit for a much smaller, weaker alien! (I'm not kidding! That was actually going to happen later on in the movie!)

I still love that Van Damme Predator doesn't do much more than pulling Classic Predator's hair. Big, angry guy with huge spear + unwise hair-pulling tactic = you deserve a swift impalement.

In looking up the reference for this commission, I did see some comments that found the original Predator design similar to the Brundlefly creature from David Cronenberg's THE FLY. Upon comparing the two...yeah, they do have a lot in common. Except both designs make sense for an insectoid mutant and not for a space-faring hunter.

You probably know this already but Jean Claude Van Damme was the original Predator's suit actor, because they wanted to have a quick, ninja-like character. Sadly, it didn't work out, but it's a neat thought nonetheless.

Yeah! I even saw some footage this past week showing him in costume. They definitely made the right choice in redesigning the monster!
