Description This is a just a simple model of a Cave Grove light mechanized unit, or Walker Tank as they were known. Crewed by a single tanker, they stood only four meters tall, and were very nimble and quick on the battlefield. Walkers were deployed in mountainous regions, within cities and even on larger orbital facilities to help repel boarding parties. They could move in all directions, and even jump short distances, and were intimidating units to confront in anything short of heavy power armor. The skilled tankers who piloted these vehicles did so through a direct brainstem implant that made the walker a literal mechanized extension of their body.

This walker will be featured in an upcoming drawing, which was hinted at in the description of my last piece

Very cool! looks like something the Japanese would use, or maybe it's the red circles

Looks like a Metal Gear model.

Very kind of you, putting such excellent red dots in critical places. Incredibly helpful for anybody trying to shoot it.

Jokes aside, I quite like the angular design. Looks just slightly post-apocalyptic with the distinct lack of metal surrounding the legs. One would think that even a paltry covering would provide enough armor/aesthetics to be worth it.

Where does the driver go, though? Looks like there's a hatch on the top of the main body, but at the same time, that would be the only place to store all the ammo, and a pilot generally should be wanted to survive the ordinance being blown away.

If you don't mind shooting at the thickest armor
The driver sits in the rear portion of the body section, and since the gun is an elecromagnetic rail-driver firing rather small diameter flechette rounds, ammo is stored forwards near the gun.

You mean walking, right?
I've got these: [link] and [link] and plenty of walking robots: [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] but not many other tanks.

Feel free to use them for inspiration, just don't copy anything.

For some reason, I'm thinking about Daleks here. Not sure. Cool design, though! *thumbs up*

I could definitely see this thing belting out "EXTERMINATE" while shooting dudes.

Reminds me of a spider. But aren't the joints vulnerable?

JazzLizard In reply to Byaukugan01 [2011-01-18 19:29:08 +0000 UTC]

Well yes, just like any other walker-vehicle. That's what the armor plating is for. They don't provide 100% protection, but they get the job done more or less.

What advanatages do the legs have over wheels or treads?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JazzLizard In reply to Byaukugan01 [2011-01-18 19:36:13 +0000 UTC]

They can climb over things that wheels or treads can't. Think of a mountain climber or hiker doing their thing, and then think of someone in a wheelchair trying to do the same thing.

Same here. This one was partially inspired by this [link] tank from the latest Turok game. You never get a really good look at it, because it's trying to kill you and you've gotta do a lot of running and screaming to survive the battle.

Hey, great concept, I like this a lot! The vent detailing underneath the rear bit (thorax? I think that's what the middle area is called, isn't it?) is really neat. The posing seems a bit awkward though - did you rig this? I have a link on my journal to a guy who figured out a neat way of rigging using Sketchup. Here's the link to his stuff, search around a bit and you should find it.

The method of operation is very familiar...

How many times have we seen Science-Fiction armour that uses a person's brainwaves and nerve impulses to operate?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JazzLizard In reply to triadenforcer [2010-12-20 13:18:37 +0000 UTC]

Hey, it's the future of control systems. They're developing it now and it'll be worlds faster than mashing buttons and scrambling for levers or pedals. I saw a program on a monkey, with no invasive surgery other than tiny metal electrodes inside of his skull (to act as antennae, not connected to anything outside his body) controlling a triple-jointed robotic arm and using it to feed himself with remarkable accuracy and speed.
