Description Number 16 in my top 25 "Mystery Science Theater 3000" countdown is an oft-overlooked classic from late in Joel's run, starring what might be the biggest celebrity to ever appear in one of the show's movies - I present 510 "The Painted Hills"!

Synopsis, from the MST3K Amazing Colossal Episode Guide:
"Lassie stars as Shep. 'The story of a great love - the love of a dog for one man.' Wow. Jonathan, a grizzled old miner with runaway hair, strikes gold on a piece of land he shares with the widow Martha. A friend of Martha's husband, Taylor, gets wind of this and offers to help Jonathan stake the claim. Taylor becomes wracked with gold fever and kills Jonathan. Together with Tommy, the widow's young son, Shep searches out Taylor to wreak sweet, sweet revenge."

I always thought the ending was kinda bittersweet: Yeah Lassie...er... "Shep" got her revenge and she lived hapilly ever after... but the gold Johnathan was killed for is lost, as was the gold dust Taylor hid from Tommy. They could've thrown in an epilogue showing Tommy's mom finding Johnathan's strike (or at least the gold dust), dammit!

In a perfect world there'd be a well-done and informative poster for each MST movie and short. Maybe someday I'll have the money to pay for such a massive waste of time.

Dang, that's quite a movie for Lassie to handle- kinda like if Frank Miller did his take on a Jack London story

I never saw that episode of MST3K where they watched it, but it sounds ridiculous and funny nevertheless on MST3K Wiki. "Oh Lassie, come out and PLAY-AY!!!"

It's hard for me to dislike a movie about a loveable dog, especially if the doggie lives. One of the better movies, but still great.

Gosh, I hadn't thought of Shep taking Taylor 'out of his element' to defeat him in years.

Hee hee..Lassie's darkest hour. XD You know back stabbing in the fashion portrayed in this movie proved even darker than when Joel and the Bots razzed 'Tormented'. Incidently, I hope some of your other favorites are 'Horror of Party Beach' and 'Outlaw'. Those are like my top two. ^__^

These are all very good episodes, but did you not like any of the Sci-Fi (or as I call them, the Corbett years)? There were some pretty good ones there, like 814-Riding With Death, 820-Space Mutiny, 901-Projected Man, 910-The Final Sacrifice, etc, etc...

I think the SciFi years are okay, but they have this certain air about them that I don't care for. There's a more overt nastiness in the writing, and it makes the show a little less enjoyable - much of the riffing is Mike and the bots complaining about how crappy the movie is, instead of them making fun of it. Plus, while Bill Corbett's Crow has his moments, I still feel that Trace Beaulieu was and will always be the definitive puppeteer for the little gold robot. It's nothing personal, just the fact that Trace has these certain lovable comedic mannerisms that are impossible to duplicate, and to me, they define Crow's character better than Bill's performance did.

Hmmm... touche`....

Still, the episodes I mentioned feature some very Comedy Central vibes. Riding With Death felt like the Master Ninja episodes at points.

The Painted Hills was on MST3K? Cool; that was one of the films shown on KEBN.

They also showed a Godzilla movie that I'm certain was an episode, as a clip of it is in the opening theme song (Godzilla sliding along the ground by his tail).

That'd be Godzilla vs. Megalon, and yes, they did it in Season 2.

Heck, compared to some of MST3K's other movies, this is a masterpiece. You haven't known true plotlessness until you've seen films like Mighty Jack, The Starfighters, and Red Zone Cuba.

This was actually one of the better movies (in fact, some people stated that they actually forgot they were watching MST3K when watching this episode as it was a movie that was actually good), but still makes for good riffing.
