Description One of my pet peeves.Β  Saying passed on or away sounds to me like they have just gone to the toilet.Β  What's wrong with saying what it is?

'Passing away' is a euphemism in place of 'died' as it softens the actual statement and prevents you coming off as blunt. To say died appears to be social unacceptable.Β

In Finnish language we say he/she has died

Because some people don't understand death.

Shit, I do! There's no point in really trying to sugar coat it. Dead is dead! They kicked the bucket, they're pushing up daisies, they are gone! There is no good way to tell someone that someone else is dead.

Eh, guess it's more sensitive. You don't tell a kid that his mother is dead and rotting in a grave, you tell him she's in a better place. That's all it is about, really.

Because some people might find that term too strong sometimes so you have to be a sensitive human about it, you can say someone died though it just depends in what situation you use it and who with you use it too.

Because a lot of people are somehow comforted by the idea that death is not the cessation of one's own awareness and consciousness.Β

...Fuckin' weird, I know, but even weirdos should not be denied the right to use whatever weird euphemisms they want.

It really depends who you talk to about this.

It is what it is, if you're religious than passed on has a measure of truth to it. Your body has died, but you have moved on to another realm, so really you haven't died at all. If you're atheist or don't believe in an afterlife, died is appropriate. It just depends on what people believe is all.

No seriously, why people can't say thing how they are? Truth ain't beautiful. If someone dies, they die.

I find it depends on who I talk to and my mood, not who I talk about. When the subject arises, I typically tell my peers that my father died; my elders he passed away.Β

Passed on implies going somewhere better, died implies a permanent end. It's kinder and more respectful to say passed on.

Well, some people take offense to "died". Which is why when I talk about my brother- I just say he passed away.Β
I've started SOO much drama by saying someone died, it's not even funny.Β
So I just learn to state otherwise.Β

I remember one TV show about children's hospital and there all the nurses and doctors never used the word 'died'.Β  All children wanted to be cured so it would have been terrifying for them to know that some children in that hospital will die. So they used other words for the death so the children who heared that discussion could not understand what the nurses and doctors were talking about.

But if the dead person is adult then using other words for death is stupid.

I know, right? I'm okay with it sometimes, but not all the time. People use it when it's totally inappropriate for the current situation. Passed away is for your great grandmother who died peacefullyΒ in her sleep. It isn't for your neighbour who was found dismembered in his home.

Quite frankly, even when others get pissed at me for doing so, I never dress up death or dying with flowery words. For instance, I wouldn't say "John went to the Great Beyond after a misstep released a flying rod of Divine Will." I would say "John died because he stepped on a pressure plate that sent a spear up his ass and out his throat."

I'm horribly blunt about these types of things. There's a reason nobody comes to me for consolation.

IHaveNoPseudonym [2014-03-01 04:21:41 +0000 UTC]

I always thought that people said "passed", simply because it sounded more peaceful especially in regard to people who die in their sleep/of natural causes. And some people place a denotation on the word "died" which, to some sounds more sudden or violent.

It's just polite. Like they're not gone gone, but their spirit still remains. I don't know. I just say both of my grandparents died recently.

If you have no heart for what the others want to hear go ahead and say that;Β Β it isΒ certainly disrespectful.Β But you should consider on when you say that especially IF somebody close died.
