Here is a rough of my Cover for Big Dog Ink's Legend of Oz Series for their Ozstravaganza show.
if you were in the livestream you already know this. But I had gotten most of the legwork done and didn't like the face. It just wasn't right and it was kind of blah.
Thank goodness my editor came in and told me to make her happy and cute.
BAM!!! The whole image changed and for the better. Seriously.

So I'm SUPER happy with these roughs. I can't wait to get started on the pencils!

I had the original roughs. They were cute, they were fine but I was asked to shrink her and add some hips to her. So I started dicking around with that this morning. As I was doing it I noticed she was just floating in mid-air. It was just a 3/4 shot and if I added her hips to run off the page I knew I'd just thrown in some mountains to the background and call it done.
For some reason this did not sit well with me. It felt bland, boring and done before. I wanted something else. So I added the circle behind her. I felt like I was getting somewhere with that so I played with it.
We all went out, I did not come back to it until this evening when I sat and thought how to spice it up. At first I thought of Aspen comics and how they do the Lady M covers with the circle but to me just doing that felt like a cheat.
So instead I went to my old back up and googled Buffalo Bill promotional posters! Yes, I know Buffalo Bill and his western traveling troop. What I found was great, a goldmine of inspiration and a kick in the head for not thinking of it before. DUH! It's WICKED WEST!!! Buffalo Bill did WILD WEST shows! It just worked. So I started making changes, pitched it and got the thumbs up from my editor to run with it.

I love when a plan comes together.
