Description A portrait of Jude Law that I did for painting class during the middle of my sophmore year (early 2004). We called this a lift-off painting...we painted a brownish-purple acrylic paint on a board, and to get all the lighter tones we would wet a brush and wipe off the paint we didn't want. So the darkest areas of the painting is how the whole thing was to begin with, and everything lighter was pushed around or taken off completely.

That's a pretty cool effect, like scratchboard but more gradiated. It gives it a lovely texture, gives the eyes a lot to take in besides the obvious subject matter. Excellent likeness, by the way (I quite like Jude Law). The smile looks a bit wrong to me, but everything else looks just like him. I can't put my finger on what it is about the smile, maybe it's just too exagerated. I guess looking at the reference pic I'd be able to tell for sure. Well, considering this was a school project, I don't guess you plan on going back to make any changes, so I guess it doesn't matter what I think Did you use another color underneath the dark purple? (sienna or some such?) It's really damn cool.

Thanks for the nice comment ^_^; Now that you mention it, it is kind of like scratchboard. I did find one thing wrong with it when I finished - his nose is too long. This ends up distorting some other stuff, but like you said, since it was a school project I'm not exactly going to go back and fix it. And anyways, even if it wasn't for school, I don't think I'd fix it. I like to see my mistakes in past works so then I can improv on the next one But no, we just used the dark purple...I think the sienna/tan/yellow color came up just from the paints that were mixed together to get the purple.

Well, that's a pretty cool effect, the color I mean. It's nice when things like that happen accidentally Yw.
