Description Part 6 of 6
(for now... more to come later?)

Brigid, which means "Fiery Arrow" or "Bright Arrow", is a Celtic three-fold goddess. Known by many names, Brigid's three aspects are Fire of Inspiration as patroness of poetry, Fire of the Hearth, as patroness of healing and fertility, and Fire of the Forge, as patroness of smithcraft and martial arts. She is mother to the craftsmen.

Goddess of the Sacred Flame of Kildare and often is considered to be the White Maiden aspect of the Triple Goddess. She was Christianized as the "foster-mother" of Jesus Christ, and called St. Brigit, the daughter of the Druid Dougal the Brown. Brighid's festival is Imbolc, celebrated on or around February 1 when she ushers Spring to the land after The Cailleach's Winter reign, when Brigid's snake comes out of its mound in which it hibernates and its behavior is said to determine the length of the remaining Winter. It is the basis for the American Groundhog Day.

This is the sixth of a six piece portfolio for Independent Study in Digital Drawing, with piece examining a uniquely feminine trait as represented by a goddess. Brigid represents creativity and inspiration.

(she's my favorite, but don't tell the others...)

I've actually been to her shrine in Ireland and I have to say that looking at this and then remembering my experience there... you've captured and managed to express the feeling of the place. I'm extremely impressed and I absolutely love this image. Thank you for bringing back to the singularly most peaceful moment ever of my life.

I like the Celtic knot-esque pattern on the moon face and I love the amount of detail in the image; she really has a motherly charm about her.

That aside, the first thing I thought when I saw this was "gives a whole new meaning to reading by candle light."

I had to favourite all of your Goddesses. They're perfect.

The triple spiral behind Her head and the flame She's writing with is just another added touch. Well done.

Just an additional point that may interest you as to her name - it comes from the Old Irish word 'brig' which means 'strength.'

Brigid meaning("exalted one")was the daughter of the Dagda, the irish god(therefore one of the Tuatha De Danann and wife of Bres of the Fomorians. You know, in fact my middle name is Brigid spelt just like this. She has always been my no.1 favourite( 2nd being Morrigan), and you have done her great justice too, great artwork brilliant job

I just LOVE this picture, esp. the celtic knotting in the moon! What gave you the idea for that?

Anyway, I was wondering if you could help me...Do you, perhaps, have any links to where I could find some DETAILED descriptions of the Celtic gods/goddesses (not huge essays, but something about like what you wrote) and their symbols? Perhaps maybe even some lovely pictures, as well (like yours!)?

I'd appreciate it! ^^

I get a lot of this from various books I have (like D'Aulaire's book of Greek Myths, or an archive I have of Gods and Goddesses), online Pantheon.org is a great resource with lots of western cultures covered, for images and some symbolism goddessmyths.com is groovy, and otherwise, Wiki is always a good source.

Hope that helps

I am very grateful to you! THANKIES!!!
