This is so beautiful. I really see you put lot of work here. Β Guinevere is interesting character-it all got messed up in retellings. Arthur's affair was before marriage and he didn't know who was Morgause. Guinevere, depending on version, either was falsely accused or slept with every man that would get her power.

Guinevere is wonderful and this artwork is beautiful but I simply cannot support your claim that it is okay for Guinevere to have betrayed her husband. I think Arthur and Guinevere were both wrong to cheat; cheating is a horrible thing to do.

I don't get why Guinevere gets all the hate. Arthur had several affairs, not just the one with his sister. Why couldn't Guinevere have her measly one?
Oh, right, because she has breasts and female genitalia.

Crudeness and frankness tread similar lines. Β I'm not going to shy away from being frank because of the overlap.

i'm not exactly a fan of Guinevere, she didn't even try to hide what she was doing with Lancelot and didn't really care that she broke Arthur's heart. good drawing though

Just beautiful and you are right she does get the crappy end of the stick but technically she never had an affair with Lancelot at least to them it wasn't considered an affair she was a strong woman in her own right and from the research I had done some years ago as such she could take whomever she desired to her bed but with the predominance of priests changing the old legends to better suit their own religion she was turned into some harlot which she never was, I remember before I did my research I used to hate Guinevere because I felt she betrayed Arthur and then after I felt so bad because this woman did not deserve what they did to her. As for Arthur sleeping with his sister it always felt a little Egyptian dynasty to me.

King Arthur had sex with Morgan Le Fay before he married Guinevere.

Arthur was actually deceived by Le Fay into thinking he was sleeping with his wife, Guinevere. And her adulterous affair with Lancelot brought death and misery to Camelot and the kingdom, so it was pretty awful and she deserved whatever she got.

ShiroAgeha In reply to Velaad [2013-06-28 10:56:45 +0000 UTC]
Ignorance, pure and simple. Camelot's downfall was actually due to the son borne of the incestuous union between Arthur and Morgause. The events perpetuated by the affair simply served as a pretext for Mordred's coup. He would have attempted takeover either way.

mariasindellagrayson In reply to ShiroAgeha [2013-08-08 03:06:44 +0000 UTC]
Oh, shut your trap. Mordred is to blame for the downfall of Camelot, not Guinevere, but Arthur's actions do NOT excuse Guinevere's betrayal.

ShiroAgeha In reply to mariasindellagrayson [2014-01-04 23:28:10 +0000 UTC]
Guinevere's betrayal was predated by several affairs on Arthur's part. Β I hope you aren't implying that Guinevere is the only one in the wrong- neither party is guiltless, and I am of the opinion that being faithful to a faithless partner is self-effacing and stupid- something Guinevere, historically, was not.

If you wanna get REALLY technical, it wasn't with Morgan le Fay but with Arthur's OTHER half-sister, Queen Morgause of Orkney. She and Morgan often get combined into a gestalt character in modern interpretations. And while, yes, Guinevere's affair was the beginning of the end for Camelot, really it was doomed from the beginning because of how Arthur was born. Morgause deliberately got pregnant from her half-brother to sire Mordred because she wanted revenge for Uther Pendragon's rape of her mother. So, yeah, Guinevere kind of was asking for it with her affair, but it's not like her role in Camelot's destruction was that big. The whole thing was bound for death and misery right from the start because of Uther.

Half-sister. Morgan Le Fay was Arthur's half-sister... not that I'm an expert on this or anything.

In Rosemary Sutcliff's Arthurian novel, "Sword At Sunset", she postulates that Arthur owed the druids a favor and they wanted his new queen for a ceremony. To pay the debt, he gave her into their keeping. When she returned the next morning, she was not the same; would never be the same. She never said what she had witnessed or what had been done to her, but the romantic love she had for her husband was over. Your picture of her still captures her in her innocence, yet the erotic longing she will produce in men is evident from her expression and the incredibly lovely, yet sexy gown. The wreath upon her head suggests her ties to the druids and the old ways.

Mmm... well. I'll say now that the art itself is very nice.. but.. Arthur wasn't AWARE he was with his sister you know.. and he was forced in the first place (magic spell). So that.. really wasn't his fault.
She.. on the other hand.. was well.. a bit of a brat. She matured near the end but for most of it.. well.. she was kinda.. selfish.

I think that you write very well.I never thought about how women view the characters from arthurian legend and Greek mythology. Like Guinevere, the Medusa also seems to have been given a raw deal and more fatal than that of the lady of Camelot.

Read Mists of Avalon, it will make you HATE her, and then read The Dragon Queen by Alice Borchardt, it will make you love her again, because unlike in the mists of avalon she's not a stupid wet sop who is way to pious. i love your affair comment too, lol, too true

The pic is very beautiful, I get cofused with the Arthur legend because they are so many different accounts. Many do not have Lancelot in them at all he was made up MUCH later & added, & Gwen did not have an affair with lance she had one with Mordred or some such charater believed to be Mordred & later it was change to lancelot if she had an affair at all (Some she never did).
As to why it was a big deal that she had an affair DNA to bring question into if a prince was really the king's son was to put the country into war. Gwen worked hard to make the kingdom with Arthur (which is why I don't believe she would have an affair) yet she destroyed with perfect knowlegde that it would happen, in dispair of what she done she went WILLINGLY into the convent. (Or fled to her fathers keep or died of a broken heart ect.)
As for Arthur & his sister (super sick) relationships & even marriages between brother & sister were common, it happened before his marriage not during. But remember for every version of these people it is a story, & stories are made to teach. If you choose to follow the stories that involve an affair with lancelot remember Arthur was her great love & she was a great queen.

What an interesting interpretation of Gwenivere!
Admittedly, I always resented the relationship between Gwen and Lancelot until I read the Once and Future King. Now I both admire and forgive them, and she is definitely one of the most interesting female characters in Arthurian Legend.
This is a beautiful representation of a beautiful character, and I've VERY pleased to have stumbled upon it!
