Description So... Life has been INSANELY busy, I need to go through all of my notes and emails (I will, I SWEAR!!!) and finish up commissions, etc. Until then, a little something to mull over...

CHOW #94 - Yin & Yang
www.ConceptArt.org

I got to host this one cause I won a couple weeks back (woo!) and I wanted to show my Yin & Yang as Chaos vs. Creation, one weaving the tapestry of the world on a loom made from the other, the other one consuming everything, etc... yadda yadda yadda. I just wanted to draw flowy things, let's be honest.

Also, I know, I switched them, I did it on purpose. Assuming women are weaker makes me annoyed, so she gets to be the dominant for once.

2H & HB Pencil on Bristol Smooth Vellum Board
Scanned in 6 parts
Colored in Photoshop CS3 with my Preciousssssss....
(about 2 hours drawing, 4 hours coloring)

Amazing.  Although one little critique.  To the main concept that even that both are light and dark.  That there is light in dark and dark into light.  It be interesting...unless I'm not seeing it.  It is an awesome masterpiece.  I must admit it.  Back to my original thought but I might see it.  I might need some clarification that the others holding onto the others symbolize the light holding on to the dark and vice versa.  Also a thought on the background (if I am wrong) to see the light shine behind her the dark and the opposite the devil like creature.  I hope I might help.  Love it though. Love it!

Wow! I can't believe how detailed this is. Yang eating Yin could use some more definition though. Fantastic job!

Its a bit ironic considering Yin is the woman and darkness, representing passive and receptive and emotion. :3

very nice...but the whole women is weaker thing is completely wrong. yin and yang isn't about dominance its about complicity, one cannot exist without the other.

In reality, Yin (the black side) is the female and Yang (the White) is the male. So it confuses me, but I still think the actual artwork is impressive.

I like it. Though I do not agree with the assessment that women are purported as "weaker" by default in the symbol of Yin/Yang. Yes, those things we would normally view as "bad" are found in the dark, female part of the symbol. But really they are just two parts equally necessary for life. That is the basic idea of Yin/Yang: the balance of all things.

However, your portrayal of her takes my mind to Amaterasu, the Sun Goddes in Japanese Shinto. Also, you have managed to give it a certain stereotypical feeling what with the weave in a female's hands.

But great piece of art!

It's absolutely gorgeous work, and in the Western tradition, calls upon the trope of Death and the Maiden.

But in Eastern tradition, yin is the female force (black) and yang (white) the male force...

This is beautiful! One thing I don't get is how everyone says that Yin is negative(bad) and Yang is positive(good), but Yin sometimes is always shown as (the term we use against each other) "good". So what I am asking is who is positive and who is negative?

i've actually seen the female play the light role more on contemporary artwork, because i've seen a lot of people use death as the yin. i think a pretty white maid just is more aesthetically pleasing. still, yin doesn't represent weakness, it's a perfect balance of power. it's just receptive power.
