"Arguably the most distinctive member of the Eaves-Beyer spaceframes, the Magee Class was the finalized iteration of the Unihull "flying pancake" concept. Where the line between saucer, drive and nacelles blurs into a single functioning unit. This compact assembly necessitated some reinforcement and padding from hazardous sections of the ship. However, access and maintenance have been simplified to a point where operating procedures are comparable to a large shuttlecraft rather than a conventional starship. This made the Magee popular with research and scientific missions, being simple to maintain and only requiring a small crew. Several units have also been converted as escort ships, adding to the type's versatility."Attached to Starfleet Medical, the USS Sophia (NCC-1457) was modified as a hospital ship. Taking advantage of her Warp 7 dash capability, she was able to treat and care for a large number of patients and injured. The ship's rapid response capability was instrumental in saving countless lives during the short and brutal 2256-2257 Federation-Klingon War.
