The Type 2008 Chengun-class (Putonghua: 陈衮) is a class of nuclear-powered attack submarines created by Yongsheng Heavy Machinery Industries. Using state-of-the-art technology, the submarine was designed to combat large groups of enemy warships and submarines.
Featuring a compact and integrated hydrodynamically efficient hull for reduced broadband noise, the hull is constructed from low-magnetic materials. Thanks to the submarine’s high degree of automation, the Chengun-class only requires a crew of 62. The submarine incorporates a double hull system composed of an inner pressure hull and an outer "light" hull, allowing for more freedom in the design of the exterior hull shape and resulting in a submarine with large reserve buoyancy.
The Chengun-class is armed with thirty vertically-launched anti-ship missiles, which are launched from fifteen vertical missile launchers. Each launcher carries two missiles. The submarine is fitted with six 533mm torpedo tubes, with each capable of launching an anti-ship missile. Equipped with a spherical sonar, the advanced sonar system of the Chengun-class consists of a spherical bow array, flank arrays and a towed array.
The first Type 2008 Chengun-class nuclear-powered attack submarine was built in early 2008 and commissioned on July 17, 2010.
