Description

MEMNON OF RHODES

Memnon was a Greek commander from the island of Rhodes, in the service of the Persian Empire. He fought against Alexander the Great at the beginning of his conquest of the Persian Empire and was nearly successful in stopping the Macedonian invasion of Asia.

Memnon spent most of his life at the service of the Persian Empire. During that time, he married Barsine, the daughter of a Phrygian satrap (governor) called Artabazos II. This satrap once led a rebellion against the then ruling Persian king Artaxerxes II, with Memnon and his brother as generals, but the rebellion failed, and Memnon had no other choice than going into exile, so he fled to the capital of Macedon, Pella, then ruled by Philip II. During his exile in Macedon, Memnon became a friend of king Philip and his son, the 7-year-old prince Alexander. Memnon had long conversations with the young Alexander, telling him stories about his years at the service of Persia. His relationship with the Macedonian court made Memnon realize about Philip’s intention to invade the Persian Empire, which he had been serving almost all his life. He also saw that many Greeks didn’t like the Macedonian hegemony over Greece. After a few years in Macedon, Memnon returned to the Persian service, with all the knowledge he had gained about Philip’s military capabilities and plans. Philip ultimately began an invasion of Asia, to free the Greek colonies of Anatolia from the Persian rule, and Memnon was the one facing him. Then Philip was assassinated and succeeded by his 20-year-old son Alexander, who continued his father’s campaign against Persia. After Alexander’s first great victory in Asian soil, Memnon urged the Persian king Darius III to orchestrate a rebellion in mainland Greece, which would force Alexander to abort his conquest of Asia and return home. Memnon successfully captured several Aegean islands with his fleet and started negotiations with king Agis III of Sparta to start a rebellion against Macedon. Fortunately for Alexander, Memnon suddenly died of natural causes, and Sparta’s rebellion came too late, as Alexander had already won another decisive victory against the Persians. At that point he would risk losing Greece in favour of winning an empire in the East.

I love this process that you do so well.  Create a fantastic visual of the person you are teaching us about.  Most of your subjects I've heard of before, but your take on the way you present it is like it's fresh all over again. I enjoy your works so much because of this.

Great piece of art!!😀 Speaking of Memnon, I'd be really curious to see your take on his niece/wife Barsine, who later became Alexander's concubine. Keep up the fantastic work!!

So let me get this straight, he was greek by birth, but served the persian empire, rebelled against it, fled to Macedonia and became friend of King Philip, and with the excuse of greek cities who did not like macedonian rule he returned under persian service, and then obstructed Philip from freeing greek colonies of Anatolia, and suggested Darius III to set up a rebellion in greece to sabotage Alexander, partying up with Aegis of Sparta in their rebellion against Macedon.

That pretty much makes him the worst traitor in history to me.

Actually, i'm 35 as you what do you mean by that, anyway? that i should grow some awareness that such decisions, including frequent side-switching, are needed in life or just that sometimes the situation is more complex than it seems?

It meant that there are far worse traitors and double-crossers in history than Memnon of Rhodes. Perhaps when you are more experienced, you will know that and will find that statement of yours funny as much as I did...

No, I'm sure that he meant the historical record contains worse examples still of treachery upon treachery by a single person.

uh i can believe that, it was more to underline his behaviour and put it under a more treacherous light than of a "valiant mercenary who fought many wars and served many armies" XD

The colors, al the little details... I love it.

Something about his swordarm looks a bit odd to me. Can't quite say what though.

But maybe that's just me.

Again, this looks absolutly awesome.

JFoliveras In reply to Lukac2002 [2019-05-15 15:37:21 +0000 UTC]

Not this Memnon. The Ethiopian Memnon was the one who participated in the Trojan War (along with soldiers from his land), but that was many centuries before Memnon of Rhodes (an enemy of Alexander the Great). The Memnon of the Trojan War is also underrated, he was a badass warrior just like Achilles, and unlike Achilles, he was really black (yet in the Netflix series "Troy, fall of a city" they prefered to make Achilles while Memnon didn't even appear in the show)

I absolutely love how colourful he is, especially in an era when Hollywood paints everyone in shades of brown and grey.

JFoliveras In reply to WittsArt [2019-05-15 15:44:49 +0000 UTC]

In most Hollywood movies set in Ancient Greece, they actually usually portray everything in white: white temples, white statues, white clothes. Black and grey is usually how movies set in the Middle Ages usually look like. In reality, neither Greece was all-white, nor the Middle Ages were all-black. Humanity has a tendency to love colors, specially those who could afford the widest range of exotic pigments and dyes.
